Pre-K & Kindergarten Registration Time
Pelham Elementary School is getting a head start (no pun intended) on Pre-K & Kindergarten Registration! Parents of potential Pre-K or Kinder students can pick up the registration packet at the PES front office anytime from 8:30 a.m.- 2 p.m., weekdays in January 2023. After the registration packets are complete and turned in to the registrar each Pre-K registrant will receive a school backpack filled with various items and tools to prepare for Pre-k. Each potential Kindergarten student will set up a time for their initial placement evaluation.
If you have any questions pertaining to this process please contact Maria Free, PES Registrar at 294-8170 ext. 204. Please help spread the word to our future Little Hornets' families!

Parents and PBIS
Schools. As we can determine from the title this is a program to boost, support and model positive behaviors in the school setting. You have surely by now heard of Bee Bucks, Golden Hornets, Star Cards etc.. no matter which school your student attends. The incentives and rewards for good behavior have been implemented at all levels of student growth. Each school has a PBIS team that meets monthly or quarterly to discuss behavior events, referrals and especially the impact incentives and positive reinforcement may or may not be having in the school. I am currently one of the staff members serving on the PHS PBIS team.
One behavior that is concerning at middle and high schools in our country in the last few years is vaping. Vaping materials and e-cigarettes are far too easy for teens to obtain, use on the down-low and become addicted to. These products can come in many shapes and sizes, some look like actual cigarettes or cigars, but most are likened to commonly used items like flash drives or pens. The e-cig is advertised as the smokeless alternative to cigarettes but may cause more health risks especially to minors than the former. The JUUL, the e-cig most shaped like a flash drive, is now the most commonly sold e-cig in the US and the refill "pods" contain at least as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes. Scientists are still learning about the long-term effects of the use of e-cigs but we already know that nicotine exposure during adolescence can harm the developing brain, impact learning, memory, and attention. The use of nicotine in the teen years can also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs. The PHS PBIS team wants to make parents aware of the increase in vaping across our country and to be educated on the subject. To research more on this subject access the E-Cigarettes and Youth Toolkit for Partners- How you can help end the epidemic by the CDC and visit their website <https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/about-e-cigarettes.html>
