A Note from Our Principal
Dear North Beach Families and Community,
A huge shout out to Luci Bakker, our fabulous librarian, for spearheading Literacy Night this week. A big thank you as well to parents Adam and Chantel Frizzell, and Tara Nessan for supporting the event, and to the many North Beach teachers and support staff, as well as our 5th grade leaders, who volunteered to make the night successful. Finally, thank you to all our families for supporting our students’ reading by attending both Literacy Night and our Book Fair, which will benefit the school library.
Over the last three years we have had the opportunity to photograph the entire school for the cover of our yearbook. We would like to continue this tradition. On Friday, November 22nd, please have your kids wear a RED, PINK or WHITE shirt to school. Remember, it is cold outside and they are standing there for about 15 minutes, so if they have this color as a coat, sweater or long sleeved shirt this will help to keep them warm and comfortable.
Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Office
Photo retakes are coming the morning of November 22nd. Forms are in the office.

Counselor’s Corner
Our Book of the Month for November is an oldie but goodie, The Zax by Dr. Seuss. We are using this to introduce/review the final Anchor Tool of RULER, the Blueprint (below). The Blueprint helps students and adults develop empathy, learn to problem solve, make decisions, and resolve conflict.
We encourage use of the Blueprint when interpersonal situations arise in the classroom or on the playground that require perspective-taking. The Blueprint can be applied to situations that occurred in the past, are happening in the present, or might occur in the future. You can practice using the Blueprint at home when disagreements and conflict arise or by encouraging your child to think how storybook characters can resolve their conflicts.
The BIG GIVE continues!
Great job Seals! Herbie is busy visiting classrooms and we are going strong to reach our goal of $70,000 and 100% school participation! We are currently at 57% school participation and have raised almost $48,000! There is still time to say, “Count me in!” by turning in your GOLDEN ENVELOPE or to PARTICIPATE ONLINE.
Completing your participation form you:
Help your child’s class win the Classroom Competition! Classrooms reaching 100% participation are eligible to win a $250 classroom grant. Classrooms with the most participation on a given day of the campaign get a visit from Herbie the Seal!
Have your child’s name entered for a chance to take home Herbie the Seal, our beloved stuffed mascot at the end of the campaign!
Signal to your child, your school, and your community your commitment to making North Beach Elementary a great place for kids to learn.
PLEASE include classroom information for each of your attending Seals. Completing the donation form online fulfills any requirement for classroom participation goals.
PTA Spotlight on Volunteers
Meet with District 1 School Board Director, Saturday, Nov. 16, 10-11:30am
Join outgoing District 1 school board director Scott Pinkham--and possibly the new incoming director--at Greenwood Library to discuss issues relevant to North Beach and other schools in our neighborhood. These issues include school overcrowding, school condition, safety, and the possible dismantling of the Highly Capable Cohort (HCC) program.
The school board works for us and needs to hear what our concerns are for our children's education. If you can commit to attending one school board meeting or director meeting a year, we could have a huge impact. Hope to see you there!
Bike Safety Unit Begins Nov. 21st! Bring Your Helmets to School!
Between November 21st – December 16th, we are going start our bike safety unit. The unit is for 3rd-5th grade with bikes, but I’m going to be extend it for K-2nd. I’ll be teaching some of the same rules of the road while using razor scooters. The students riding the bikes will be outside riding on the far basketball court near P8. The students riding the razor scooters will be riding in the gym and on the play court. Any student who would like to bring their own helmet is encouraged to do so. This will make fitting helmets much easier and allows us more time to focus on other content. I feel this is a good opportunity for our kids to show responsibility. I have helmets available for any student who doesn’t have one. If you have any questions, please ask!
Thanks,
Frank Willis (Coach Willis)

North Beach Elementary Giving Tree 2019
Greetings! In the spirit of the winter holiday celebrations, North Beach Elementary community donates gifts for students in our school community and local Seattle Public School students who could use a helping hand.
To receive a gift, please let us know how we can help by completing our Giving Tree form. At no time will your name or your student’s name be shared.

Please try to be as specific as possible when completing your form. For example, if your child could use some new shoes for basketball practice, please tell us basketball shoes rather than simply shoes. Donors typically spend between $30-40 on a gift.
Please submit your request by Nov. 21, 2019.

New Car Seat Law - Effective January 1, 2020
A new car seat law goes into effect in WA on Jan 1,2020. Here is a link to a good breakdown of the new law:
https://wereparents.com/washington-state-car-seat-laws-2019/
The biggest change is that any child under 4'9" will need to be in a booster seat effective 1/1/20. Please check your child's total height as this may mean some kids going back into booster seats.
Board Games Needed
Do you have board games (with all their game pieces) that your kids have out grown or you want to upgrade? Ms. Gabrielson, our wonderful Art Teacher, would like to take them off your hands. To donate please leave in her classroom (room 15) or in the office. These games are going to be put to good use.
Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Pick Up
Mornings can be quite hectic around the school so please observe the following guidelines to keep our children safe:

Cross only at crosswalks. Do not cross in the middle of the street.
Speed limit in front of the school is 15 mph.
Parking around the school is limited. Do not park within 30 feet of a stop sign or within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
No U-turns on 24th Avenue, or using 91st Street to make a U-turn.
No parking in the bus zone (even when no busses are present)
Parallel parking only in front of the house at the NW corner of 24th and 91st. Let's also be good neighbors and not block their mailbox.
