Paint Pot 1
Challenge
Objective:
- apply their understanding of events to a new mobile app program.
Wrap-up discussion
- Do you notice any limitations? Did you notice that all of the paint dots have the same radius -- 5 pixels? We'll address this the next time we work on the app after we have talked about variables.
Poetic Variables
Variables allow for a lot of freedom in computer science. This lesson helps to explain what variables are and how we can use them in many different ways. This activity helps set up the next one, in which the girls will use a variable to improve their Paint Pot app.
Vocabulary
Variable-a name or placeholder for a piece of data that can change in value.
Abstraction-the practice of simplifying complex data, especially data that needs to be changed by the user.
Paint Pot 2
Activity
Objectives
- apply their understanding of abstraction and variables to enhance their existing mobile app.
- use their understanding of variables to make their existing mobile app program user customizable.
Challenge: adapt the app to allow users to change their brush size.
Wrap-up discussion
- Abstraction is sometimes defined as "reducing information and detail to focus on what's relevant." In your opinion, does the use of the dotsize variable fit this definition? Why or why not?
