Welcome to Serendipity Elementary!

Dear Stephen and Carrie,

We understand that you probably have many questions and concerns as your daughter Kim prepares to join us in kindergarten. Starting school is a special time in every child's life, and it is our greatest desire that we start off on the best foot possible with all of our new students. I hope that the information in this newsletter helps to address some of your concerns regarding the upcoming transition meeting. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to reach me by email at r.seidler@serendipityelementaryschool.ca

Thanks,

Rebecca Seidler

ELK teacher, Serendipity Elementary School

What is the objective of a transition meeting?

Transitioning from daycare to kindergarten can be challenging for many students. When these students have pre-existing challenges, the transition can be that much harder for them. By planning ahead and developing a transition plan, we can make this as smooth a change as possible and greatly increase the ease of the transition and the likelihood of success.

Who will assist with the transition?

As Kim's teacher, I will be watching over her day to day routines and learning in the classroom. I will be in contact with you regularly to let you know how she is progressing and letting you know what you can do to support her with the changes she will be facing. You are a key part of the transition process as well! It is important that you communicate with me to let me know how you think she is coping, and stay involved and invested in the process. The other members of the transition team who will be actively involved in Kim's transition are:

How we can assist with the transition

What is the process?

1. A meeting between the transition team and yourselves, Kim's parents, will allow us to discuss Kim's strengths, interests and areas of need. This information is crucial to developing a plan for her entry to kindergarten this fall.

2. If you have any relevant documentation (i.e medical, speech and language, physical assessments) please bring them to the meeting as these reports may help us to create the perfect plan.

3. Goals will be discussed and adjusted based on whether or not they appear to be achievable.

4. Supports and strategies will be put in place, and resources planned to assist Kim in achieving the goals that we set.

5. Each member of the team will leave the meeting with specific responsibilities in ensuring the plan is carried out.

Why do we do all this?

To ensure a positive start to Kim's school career. As far as we are concerned, every child deserves the best we can offer, and in doing so we believe that we can minimize any barriers to learning that exist and provide the greatest chance of success. The successes that Kim achieves this year will increase not only her enjoyment of school, but also her success in future life.
