Counselor's Corner: Mindfulness
In December students reviewed the Zones of Emotional Regulation (more info can be found here ZonesofRegulation) and learned what it means to “flip our lid”, basically when we act on our emotions without thinking calmly and making practical decisions first. One recommended strategy for calming our bodies is to use Mindfulness by noticing what’s happening in the present moment (Kids Explain Mindfulness). Mindfulness can help us learn to pay close attention to many things and can help us calm down when we’re stressed, anxious, angry, sad, frustrated, or have a difficult emotion. Students learned that practicing Mindfulness throughout their day can help them focus in school and help them to relax.
This month we learned the importance of taking Mindful Minutes to calm our bodies by practicing mindful listening with mindful bodies. We also practiced deep breathing techniques and each student either has or will soon be making a Mindful Bottle or Calming Jar (Mind in a Jar). These bottles are to be used to help students relax and soothe themselves by focusing on the motion happening inside the bottle. This is an easy way to help children focus on deep breaths and relaxing after an upsetting event. Parents can say: “When feeling sad, mad or need a break, give your jar a gentle shake. Take deep breaths as you watch the glitter fall, it will help you calm down; brain, body and all. When you need to calm down it's a helpful tool. Use it until you feel calm.”

Seeking Your Input on Welcoming New Families to Forest Hills
The Forest Hills School Advisory Committee is bringing in the New Year by seeking your input on an innovative initiative that helps us welcome new families to our FHES community. Our friends at IdeaScale generously offered their crowdsourcing platform to help us generate and collaborate on ideas that support this effort.
Our goal is to provide new students and their families with all the information and resources they need in a timely, relevant, inclusive, and delightful manner. The site will remain open for collaboration through April 30th, 2020, where the data will be reviewed for actionable opportunities. If you would like to contribute in this initiative, we invite you to participate here:
https://forest-hills.ideascale.com/a/register
By clicking the link above or the buttom below, you'll have an opportunity to submit ideas you feel would be helpful to equip and welcome a new family to the FHES community. You will also have an opportunity to review other submissions and build on each other's ideas to foster the collective wisdom of the community!
Forest Hills Science Night
The Forest Hills Science Night is coming up! The event will be held Wednesday, February 26th from 5:30-7:30pm. This year we are introducing a fun new format where science projects will be displayed in the gym, iLAB, and library. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about a math, science, or technology topic of interest to them. If your student would like to participate by doing a science project please register online here until Fri, Jan 24.

Elementary Boundary Review Underway
The Boundary Review Committee has begun its work. This superintendent committee is comprised of principals and parents from each elementary school as well as parents of students attending each middle and high school. They will be meeting through mid-March to develop a recommendation on how to redraw elementary school boundaries starting in the 2020-2021 school year.
You may access all of the information shared and discussed at these meetings through the boundary landing page on losdschools.org. Additionally, the boundary committee will be hosting open houses on Feb. 5 at Lakeridge High School and Mar. 4 at Lake Oswego High School, 6-8 p.m. to share current thinking and gather your feedback.
