Testing Schedules
Pickerington Schools’ testing schedules for the 2017 spring standardized assessments have been announced, with exams scheduled to begin March 28.
A testing schedule for each grade level can be found below.
A significant change from 2016’s testing schedule is that testing will be divided into two windows, with English language arts tests held the last week of March and math, science, and social studies held at the end of April and early May.
“We expect that spreading out testing into two time periods instead of having all tests compacted into several weeks will help our students and teachers avoid testing fatigue,” said Brian Seymour, director of instructional technology.
These AIR assessments are required by the State of Ohio. The Department of Education uses the results of these tests when developing school district report cards. Overall student performance is reflected in many of the indicators used to develop the report cards. Districts and schools also can be negatively affected on some of the report card’s key indicators when parents opt students out of this testing.
These assessments require students to prove they can apply knowledge they have learned in the past. They also measure whether students have mastered knowledge and skills at a particular point in time, as outlined in the Ohio standards for specific grade levels and courses.
At the district level, the information from the AIR assessments help Pickerington Schools gauge individual students’ progress and the effectiveness of the district’s approach to education. They are one of the tools we use to determine what is working, and what we need to improve for the district, buildings, classrooms or even individual students. These standardized tests also gauge our progress in comparison to what’s happening in other school districts.
Fortunately, these tests are just a few of tools districts use to assess how much individual students – and the district – are improving. Pickerington Schools also use data from things such as college entrance exams, ST Math, STAR, mastery-based grading, and local assessments.
By studying data from all these tools, Pickerington Schools can continue our ongoing pursuit of excellence in education for our students.
