Team 9 Core Classes

Language Arts

We are well into our second unit of the year. The focus of this unit will be on one of the most famous books ever written--To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Even though this book was published in 1960, the lessons it contains are more important than ever.

Students just finished a small writing assessment over chapters 1-6 in To Kill a Mockingbird. The writing task asked students to explain how Atticus (the father) shapes or influences the morality of his children, Jem and Scout. Students will be scored on their ability to make a claim and support it with evidence from the text. I will be providing feedback to students for this piece of writing this week! Ask your student to share their feedback with you.

We are now through chapters 1-7 in the book. On Wednesday, students will take their third quiz over To Kill a Mockingbird. This quiz will cover chapters 7-9. The quizzes that we take for this book should be extremely easy if students are doing the reading and participating in class discussion.

Please feel free to e-mail me at any time with questions or concerns about your student's progress in Language Arts. I am happy to help with all of your needs! Thank you for sharing your student with me--I'm having a great school year with this group of 8th graders.

This week we applied the Bill of Rights to real life. We created a Student Bill of Rights and then we looked at actual Supreme Court cases and applied the Bill of Rights to see if there was a violation. If you want to challenge our High Score of 4,900 by Lorna Rae on iCivics "Do You Have A Right?" game use this link : https://www.icivics.org/games/do-i-have-right

This week students also wrote their own opinion to a real Supreme Court case applying the rights in the Amendments to the Constitution.

Next week, we will learn about Federalism, Political Parties and Elections as we move in to Unit 3- America's First Presidents!

Science

Hey all!

This week we started our Land form Project. Students will be researching a specific land form that was a part of the Louisiana Purchase or Lewis and Clark's expedition and making a presentation for next Wednesday the 6th. Students have the option to make a 3D model, a Powerpoint, a poster, a dodecahedron, or a poster on their land form. We will be working on these in class on Monday and Tuesday, but I encourage you with your child about their project and see what awesome ideas they come up with for their presentation!

As the weather starts getting colder and flu season approaches, I just want to remind us all to make sure we are all getting enough sleep and washing our hands frequently!

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
