Here's What's on Top at Buena Vista - Sept 28, 2022
Note from the Principal
Good Evening Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you are all doing well. We are continue to learn and grow at Buena Vista. We have been spending time in our classrooms setting goals and working on building growth mindset. Next week we start our parent-teacher conferences. If you have not scheduled a conference to learn about where your child is in their learning and what goals they are setting for themselves please reach our directly to your child's teacher. Next week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday will be shortened day schedule. Wednesday is a regular late start day.
Student Learning
Last week 5th grade students in Mrs. Bockser's, Ms. Asch's, and Ms. Yorkey's class held writing celebrations and invited parents and staff to come in and read and give feedback on all of their great work. Their focus for writing was on narrative writing and the use of descriptive language and dialog really enhanced the writing pieces. It was amazing to see so many parents and peers read and give feedback on student writing.
I also was able to visit Mrs. Wherritt's 2nd grade classroom during Reader's Workshop where readers were practicing their reading by annotating where the author was using descriptive language in the story to help create a "mind movie" of what what happening to help them imagine how things "looked, sounded and felt like" in their story. They were working on building their understanding and comprehension of what they were reading.
Ms. Mes' transitional kindergartners were comparing and contrasting traditional fairytales with alternate fairytales. They sure found a lot of similarities and differences between Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs! They even practiced drawing their own houses through directive drawing and then had to decide if bears or dinosaurs were going to live in it!
Read-A-Thon
We are doing a great job meeting our school goals for the WCEF read-a-thon. So far we have read 44,108 minutes (We have earned a Superhero Spirit Day this Friday for reaching our 25,000 mark!). We have raised $15, 215 dollars (This means you did it...our top 5 earners will be able to wrap me up like a mummy in toilet paper in front of the whole school!). We also earned a Bulldog Dance Party this Friday! for when we earned our $10,000 goals. So much fun coming our way.
Read-a-thon closes Friday at Midnight. Remember, all students that reach their personal reading goal get a pop-it. If we can make it to 100,000 minutes as a school, we will get an additional spirit day ....Hibernation Day...wear your jammies and bring your stuffies. Let's do it, crack those books. Let's keep pushing!
WCEF is our district’s fundraising partner, providing additional funding for teacher and specialist salaries, academic programs, and additional classes not possible without gifts to WCEF.
