Celebrate Earth Day with CREST!
Earth Day 2020 is this Wednesday, April 22! CREST has put together a list of a few resources for different grade levels here, or you can explore the many offerings out there by searching online for “Earth Day 2020”.
This year’s celebration marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the planet’s largest civic event. The first Earth Day in 1970 resulted in the creation of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States, and many other countries soon adopted similar laws. We usually observe Earth Day in our schools with a learning activity, celebration, or service-learning project. Though we can’t physically come together for those events at this challenging time, you can still join in with others to celebrate Earth Day at home with your families if you would like to do so. Please visit our website for a complete list of resources and activities!
- Oregon-inspired ideas for activities, films, books and more you can access online, as well as ways to get out and enjoy our Earth in person safely during this time of physical distancing. Many links are included in this article for all ages.
- Solve Oregon is rising to the challenge of an online Earth Day celebration by providing Earth-minded activities we can all do right where we live. And they note that the in-person celebration is postponed but will be announced at a future date when we can all get together again.
- Earth Day Network offers a huge menu of online activities, links to different organizations, classes, videos and webcams to connect families to our home planet even as we all shelter at home.
- If you are into environmentally-friendly gardening, recycling and composting, you can get back to the roots with the Old Farmer’s Almanac. CREST’s favorite part of this page are the ideas for writing a poem about the Earth, at the end of this article. Celebrate Earth Day by writing your own ode!
Preschool and Kindergarten Registration is Open!
Completed applications can be turned in at any meal distribution site between 10-11 a.m. every Monday-Friday. Completed applications will be delivered to the correct school. Meal distribution sites include every primary school and West Linn High School.
Nursing Notes — the Latest From the WLWV Nursing Team
Dear Students, Staff, Families and Community Members,
Let’s start with a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale. Days, or at least moments in days, are beginning to run into one another. Do you feel similarly unfocused? Science, and our own experience, proves that keeping routines really is the answer rather than just getting up when you are moved to do so either by hunger, noise or some instinct. As we intentionally wake to these new days in our smaller world, participate in distance learning, and continue to make progress despite uncertainty, we have much for which to be proud of already.
Like so much of life, we have to find it within ourselves to achieve. These days are likely more difficult as there is a lot of uncertainty. Let’s focus on gratitude and optimism to hold us accountable and to firm our feet on the new path we explore. Remember, we are designed to do hard things. Your district nurses want to support you and your families to help you find resources you may need. Here is a resource available across our nation. It is basically a "one stop” social services information system of resources including food, housing, mental health, health, transportation, etc. You will be connected by dialing 211 to listen to the prompts of resources (211info.org).
