The Marie Murphy Update
18 October 2019 Edition
TONIGHT! TONIGHT! TONIGHT! ONE NIGHT ONLY!
"Live a little" - 8th Grade Theatre Parties Like It's 1599!
In recognition of the conclusion of their Shakespeare Unit, 8th graders engaged in a Pub Day celebration in Ms. Janssen's theatre class!
Transforming the classroom into a 16th century public house, students entered to find their usual learning space adorned with candlelight ambiance, Elizabethan music, and gaming tables. Ms. Janssen, in full time-period costume, served shortbread, pretzels and water to her patrons as they engaged in spirited games of nine men's morris, a strategy game combining aspects of checkers and chess, popular in England during the time of Shakespeare.
A good time was had by all, or as Shakespeare might say:
Live a little;
Comfort a little;
Cheer thyself a little.

Digital Responsibility, Celebrating Diversity, & Respecting Others Lessons Come to MM
On Wednesday, October 23rd, 6th graders will take part in the Project B3 kickoff. The focus of Project B3 is to promote (Be) Safe, (Be) Smart, and (Be) Kind behaviors and practices on the internet. What makes this program unique is that the activities the 6th graders will be a part of during the kickoff, as well as further activities throughout the year, are run by MM 8th graders. Working under the guidance of a Project B3 trainer, as well our ITC Director, Ms. Carrie Stotz, our intervention specialist, Ms Hannah Newton, and our Technology Integration Specialist, Ms. Kelli Lane, our 8th grader leaders will work with the entire 6th grade to promote digital responsibility.
Additionally, on Thursday, October 31, all MM students will take part in grade-level workshops with Haven Youth and Family Services to address the topic of Celebrating & Respecting Diversity. Taking place in small group settings, MM students will engage in discussions and activities designed to promote respect, appreciation, and understanding for the experience and perspective of others. Haven will be running additional workshops with all MM students throughout the year focusing on resisting peer pressure and understanding anxiety.
