Happenings At MMJSHS!

Community Newsletter : October 2022 Update

It's hard to believe that October is already upon us. We have been fortunate to have such a successful start to the school year with our students actively participating and engaging in all aspects of the Millbury Memorial Junior-High School experience!

We ask that you continue to urge your students to get involved in something of interest to them. We offer so many opportunities for students and our hope is that your student will find something that they gravitate towards. If they have a particular area of interest that maybe we don't have a club or activity for, please encourage them to come to see me and we can work to make that a reality!

We are looking forward to having conversations with our families at our upcoming Parent/Teacher conference which is the first of two for the school year. Please be on the lookout for information about the event which will be shared shortly with the community!

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership!

Regards,

Chris Lowe

Congratulations to Vanessa Muturi

Millbury Memorial Junior-Senior High School is proud to congratulate the Class of 2023's very own, Vanessa Muturi, on her academic honors from the CollegeBoard's National Recognition Programs, which help students stand out during college admissions and connect them with universities nationwide helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs identify students awarded National African American, Hispanic, Indigenous, and/or Rural/Small Town Recognition through College Boardโ€™s Student Search Service.

Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town.

Eligible students will be invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and will be awarded at the beginning of the next school year. Students will receive their awards in time to include them on their college and scholarship applications.

โ€œWe want to honor the hard work of these students through the College Board National Recognition Programs. โ€œWe hope the award winners and their families celebrate this prestigious honor and it helps them plan for their big future.,โ€ said Tarlin Ray, College Board senior vice president of BigFuture.

We are so proud of Vanessa and her efforts throughout her years as a student at Millbury Memorial Junior-Senior High School. We extend our deepest congratulations to her and her family on receiving this award!

We need your HELP!!!

Have you heard? We are a Finalist for Saint Gobain's Sustaining Futures, Raising Communities Project in the Gold Category! This means that we are a finalist for a $50,000 grant to transform one of our classroom spaces. Weight Room Renovations

I am happy to finally share that we are fortunate to be converting our weight room into an updated fitness center. We have been working with a variety of groups in order to make this a reality.

The current weight room will be receiving a makeover with updated equipment, flooring, a turf-inlay, updated audiovisual equipment, new windows, etc. The project went out to bid several weeks ago and we are happy to have a contract in place.

We are looking to have renovations begin around Christmas break.

Update from Officer Gasco on our first Lockdown Drill

Please see the email that was sent by School Resource Officer, Keith Gasco, on September 29, 2022.

Hello Millbury Families,

This email is a follow-up to my automated call you received earlier today. Today we practiced a lockdown drill at (Elmwood, Shaw, Millbury Jr./Sr. High School). Specifically, this lockdown drill is done to practice what to do in the event of an emergency or threat to safety.

Again, this was just a drill and no actual threat or emergency occurred. I encourage you to talk with your children about todayโ€™s drill and the importance of the drills in relation to school safety. If you or your child has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time at kgasco@millburyschools.org

What is a Lockdown Drill?

Lockdown drills are opportunities for students and staff to practice what to do if there is an active and immediate threat of violence in the school. In accordance with A.L.I.C.E. protocols, students and staff have various options for staying safe, including locking and barricading classroom doors, relocating to another part of the school or evacuating the school entirely. To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the building until the drill is completed.

In the event of an actual emergency, it is critical that families keep the following in mind:

  • Please do not come to your childโ€™s school campus. The area around your childโ€™s school will be flooded with first responders from Millbury and surrounding towns, as well as the State Police. Your presence will make their jobs more difficult and potentially create problems for emergency vehicles trying to access or leave the site.
  • In the event of an actual emergency evacuation, the reunification spot for the Millbury Public School District is the Blackstone Valley Cinema De Lux 14, located at the The Shoppes at Blackstone Valley. This is where you should go to await the arrival of your children, in the event of an actual emergency.
  • Please avoid calling school offices. If there is an actual emergency, office staff will be actively engaged in A.L.I.C.E. protocols as well as maintaining communications with law enforcement officials. They will not be able to field additional phone calls.
  • Please do not immediately believe information posted on social media unless the post is from school or law enforcement officials. Correct and timely information will be disseminated through our automated system as soon as possible.
  • Please make sure that your contact information on record with the school is current so that you can be reached without delay in the event of an emergency.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help in keeping our school safe.

Thank you,

School Resource Officer

Keith Gasco

Automated Attendance Phone Calls Beginning October 11, 2022

Beginning Tuesday, October 11th, Millbury Jr./Sr. High School will be adjusting the way we notify parents/guardians about student absences.

Next week, we will start sending automated messages to all parents/guardians of those students marked absent by 9 am.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the contact information we have on file, please contact Kim Reuman, our Attendance Clerk, at 508-865-5841 or email kreumnn@millburyschools.org.

Morning Attendance Calls/Emails - Please reach out to our attendance clerk, Mrs. Kim Reumann.

Just a friendly reminder that if your students are going to be dismissed or absent, please reach out directly to our attendance clerk, Mrs. Kim Reumann, who is located in our high school's main office. She can be reached directly at kreumann@millburyschools.org.

September 26, 2022

Dear Parent/Guardians:

Millbury Memorial Junior-Senior High School will be hosting the PSAT/NMSQT for grade 10 and grade 11 students in the building on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. As typical, we will be offering the PSAT to all Grade 10 students at no cost to them or their families. Our students in 11th grade, who had the opportunity to test last year, but would like to test again this year, can choose to do so for the cost of $18.00. Juniors are encouraged to test as it gives them one more chance to take the test and become accustomed to the format, which is timed and unlike other standardized tests (MCAS) we administer. Their score could also make them eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is only open to 11th-grade students.

In order for juniors to register for the test, they must sign up in Guidance with Mrs. Sizer, our secretary. Please know that we only have a select number of tests for 11th-grade students. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and students will be considered fully registered when their fee is paid (cash or check). Registration closes for juniors on October 6, 2022, as we need to complete pre-administration testing in order to stay on our lunch schedule during our school day testing.

We will be pushing out information through our google classroom as well as emails and announcements during the school day and in classes. Students should make sure they are using their Millbury schools email account when joining the classroom (and filling out the registration form for grade 11 students).

Google Classroom codes are as follows:
Class of 2024: 6y44ts7 Class of 2025: r3susih

We ask that parents or students contact the Guidance office directly if they have questions. As always, thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
