What a great week we shared!
Curriculum Upate
Mrs. Blankenship's subjects:
Reading-The students will be introduced to the fifth grade Reader's Workshop. The purpose for being an avid and engaged reader as well as setting personal reading goals will be a focus. Please note that a standing 20 minute reading homework assignment is the expectation in my class. Reading may include chapter books, informational texts, current events, and reading materials that meet your approval as a parent. The goal is to read! The format may vary based upon your child's interest and reading level.
Social Studies- The students will begin a unit of study of events that lead up to the Civil War. Next week, we will focus on the advantages/disadvantages faced by the North and South in the years prior to the war. This is a sensitive subject and will be presented on a fifth grade academic level.
Writing- The students will continue with the Writer's workshop centering on Narratives. We will also incorporate grammar and word study next week. The students' first daily grade will be Friday covering the Greek/Latin roots Dict/Scrib/Graph. I will explain to the students how word study will take place this year. There will be a heavy emphasis on the use of Quizlet. All students will need access to this online program. The direct link to my class is: https://quizlet.com/join/f6tcNSvrA. Thank you to the Amin, Fleury, and Kim families for donating enough yellow legal pads to outfit the class for amazing drafting and editing in writing! I truly appreciate the support offered to our amazing students!

PTA Original Artworks- One of the PTA fundraisers this year will be Original Artworks. Students will begin their drawings in class Monday, but they may need to finish at home. We will not be participating in Boosterthon this year.
Curriculum Night- Please plan on attending Curriculum Night. Ms. Postema and I will be presenting an overview of our year. It is a wonderful way to show support for your child as well as to meet and greet other families in the "Blankenship/Postema Community".
Check out: Please refrain from checking your child out during our Recess time (10:05-10:35). It is difficult to get your child's belongings to properly checkout when they are outside and need a bookbag/supplies.
Cell phones and devices- Students may have cell phones (turned off or silenced) in their bookbags. Please do not text or call your child during school hours. I will be sending home a Bring Your Own Device form in a few weeks. My class is a BYOD class. I will explain my expectations regarding electronic devices at Curriculum Night.
· Please label your child’s belongings with his/her name.
