Hudson Hawk Band Updates

February 8-12

New GISD Camera Requirement

If your student is virtual, it is now a GISD policy for their camera to be on every class period. This is something we have stressed since last March, but is finally a requirement. In band class, this means we should be able to SEE the WHOLE STUDENT AND INSTRUMENT on the screen. Unlike other classes, the best way for us to help each student is by assessing them constantly and visually. We can tweak posture, instrument angles, hand position, embouchure, and much more that will HELP students be SUCCESSFUL, but we can only do that when we can SEE them! Please use THIS LINK if you are having trouble with technology at home. GISD wants to help and can help!

Second UIL Rehearsal for Virtual Students & Wind Symphony F2F Students

Monday, Feb. 8th, 4:15-5:30pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

Virtual students in Wind Symphony and Honors Band who have signed up to participate in the UIL performances will have their second IN-PERSON rehearsal THIS WEEK. Please drop off in the BACK of the school and have students enter directly into the band hall through the door with the platform. Students will have their temperature taken before being allowed to enter. ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR MASKS! We will provide students with bell covers and special masks to wear while playing instruments as well. Don't forget your instrument and band binder/music!

If your Face-to-Face WIND SYMPHONY student can stay for this rehearsal, we would LOVE to add them this week!

Pickup will also be in the BACK of the school, outside of the band hall. We can't wait to see you again!!!

Solo & Ensemble Contest Recording Assignment

ALL 7th and 8th grade students should be working on their solo for the Solo & Ensemble contest. We have secured recordings of the piano parts that they will play along with in their submissions. This is a REQUIRED event and ALL students will receive a TEST GRADE for their participation.

For their solo, they will need to dress nicely, introduce themselves and what piece they are performing, and have their ENTIRE BODY visible in their video. They will play along with the piano recording, making sure you can hear both the piano and the student in the video.

A detailed instructional video has been posted, and the assignment is already available on Canvas. Students who complete their Solo Contest Recording Assignment by the end of this week (February 12) will receive a bonus 100 to replace their lowest grade so far this grading cycle.

ALL SOLO VIDEOS ARE DUE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16!!!!

DATE CHANGE - Pre-UIL Performance/Recording Event

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2:30-4:30pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

All Face-to-Face Wind Symphony and Honors Band students and Virtual students from those classes who have opted IN to the UIL performance will WALK to Sachse High School on Tuesday, March 2 to record our performance for Pre-UIL. Students will be released from 8th period and will need to wear HEAD-TO-TOE BLACK CLOTHING for the performance.

**If your student is virtual and participating, please drop them off at the front door of Sachse HS at 2:45pm.**

ALL STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BE PICKED UP FROM SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL AT 4:30pm.

Parents are not allowed to attend the performance, but we will share our recording with you!

We are recording at Sachse High School because they have more space for our group to safely perform and our recording will sound MUCH better than if we recorded in our gym or cafeteria.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

The window for spring Parent/Teacher conferences is quickly approaching. If we feel we need to have a conference, you will be contacted by either Mrs. Becker or Mr. Urban this week to set up a time to discuss your student's progress. Thank you so much for always being supportive of your students and our program. We are so lucky to have a community who works together to ensure all of our students are successful and thriving!
Big picture

It's never too late to get started in private lessons! If you want your student to catch up, get ahead, or just get more reinforcement, click below to sign up.

Helpful Info/Reminders

6/7 Grade Choice of Subject

Our current 6th and 7th graders should receive their Choice of Subject form for the 2021-2022 school year very soon. We wanted to point out that if your student has been struggling this year and hasn't been as excited about band, we WILL get back to "normal" band in the future. The way we've been forced to have rehearsals and concerts this year is atypical and not nearly as fun. If your student has been missing out on the football games, field trips, and contests, they are not alone! We hope that you will all continue in band next year and that we will get to enjoy all our favorite parts of being in band again very soon! Hang in there!

School-Owned Instrument Usage Fees

The $50 per year ($25/semester) fee charged by GISD for students who use a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, French horn, euphonium, and tuba) has now been assessed to your student's Skyward account. The payment for the use of the school instrument is due by March 1, but can be paid online anytime now. You can use a credit card in Skyward or send cash/check (made out to Hudson Middle School) with your student to school. Further details about how to pay online will be sent soon for those who need extra help completing their payment.

**Occasionally, we have students that play other instruments, not listed above, who use a school-owned instrument. The fee has been assessed to those students as well.**

For step-by-step instructions to pay this fee in Skyward, CLICK HERE.

Spring Band Fees

We are still working out exactly what performance and events we will be able to do this spring. Once all of those things are finalized, we will let you know the cost for spring band fees. It will likely be VERY minimal!
