Growing Young Hearts and Minds

It's All About the Books

Being able to choose good fit books is a very important skill for all students. We learned to think about the acronym "I PICK" which stands for I pick books that fit my Purpose (for fun, for learning, etc.), that I am Interested in, that I can Comprehend. and one in which I Know most of the words.

We also discussed how reading can be like weight lifting. To be able to lift heavy weights, we need to lift smaller weights over and over to build our muscles. That's why our fluency work may seem easy for some but the rereading does build our "reading muscle". Sometimes we need a spotter when we try to lift a heavy weight and sometimes we need to get help when we want to try a more challenging book because we are super interested in it.

Learning to Spell Through Word Patterns

Next week your child will begin bringing home spelling words. Eight of these words will be chosen by the student from lists created in class using that week's spelling pattern/word family. The difficulty of the words ranges from those containing a simple consonant beginning to words using the pattern in more complex words. (fill, chill, willing, illuminate...) Two words are sight words all second graders need to know to be good readers and writers.

We have been hard at work during our morning workshop this week learning various activities to challenge our thinking about our patterns and practice our word list.
