WBMS Friday Notes
October 10-12
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
While it was a short week, as always, it was full. Our volleyball teams participated in their first games, our 7th grade band and 7th and 8th grade orchestra students hosted a fall concert, and many students tried out for the musical and tennis. In addition, tons of clubs and organizations gathered to collaborate on academic, social, and philanthropic projects. Participating in extracurricular activities improves students’ social, emotional, and academic skills. Specifically, research supports that these additional opportunities expand students’ interests, offer productive breaks, increase confidence and collaboration, and decrease absences and disciplinary issues. If your student is not currently taking advantage of one of the many activities we offer, please speak with him or her this weekend about finding an opportunity that sparks his or her interests. Inside the school day we are also working on building smaller communities within our school through our Compass classes. During this time students work on academic goal-setting and conference with an adult, engage in team-building, social/emotional lessons, and altruistic projects. For example, today their goal was “Showing Gratitude to Others.” Our students took part in “Bert’s Big Thank You,” which is an initiative to ensure all soldiers deployed overseas receive a handwritten letter on Thanksgiving Day. WBMS will send over one thousand letters of gratitude to our service personnel! I am proud to be part of a school that values students’ passions inside and outside of the classroom and works to build an attitude of gratitude.
Enjoy the cooler weather this weekend with your families and friends!

Scholastic Book Fair is here!
The online option for the book fair is live NOW, so you are welcome to shop online for students or their teachers’ classrooms (or share the information with family members who might be interested in ordering gifts).
Our on-site book fair will kick off at our International Festival on Thursday, October 25th, so families are encouraged to come shop when they visit the festival that evening. Students will also visit with their Language Arts classes and we have a new option this year for parents to direct their child’s spending at book fair. The eWallet option allows parents to designate an upper limit amount for spending, and deducts only the amount the student spends during the fair.

Is your child on a Travel Sports Team? Check this first.
If you are planning to travel during the school year, please review your child’s attendance record first. Students who miss 10 or more total days of school this year will be asked to provide medical notes for additional absences to be considered excused. Fulton County Schools’ attendance policy can be found online at http://www.boarddocs.com/ga/fcss/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=9EHLDB554789. If you anticipate that your child will have a planned absence (as in a tournament out of state), submit a letter to the principal PRIOR to the planned absence for pre-approval consideration. Whenever possible, please schedule your family travel/vacation time to coincide with school breaks and avoid missed class time. Thank you for your assistance in keeping your student present for class instruction.
Can my 13 and 16 year old stay home alone overnight? Guidelines about supervision
Each year, the school is informed about minors staying home alone overnight. Below are the guidelines provided by Child Protective Services for the amount of time and ages children may be left unsupervised or supervised by a child under 18 years old.
1. Children eight (8) years and under should never be left alone.
2. Children between the ages of nine (9) and twelve (12) may be left alone for brief periods of time (less than two (2) hours) when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker. Children between 9 and 12 years old may not supervise other children or younger siblings.
3. Children ages thirteen (13) and older may be left alone and may perform the role of baby-sitter as authorized by the parent/caretaker. It is advisable to limit this time to twelve (12) hours or less and only when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker. Minor children may not be left alone overnight. It is also suggested that those children over the age of thirteen (13) caring for others should have participated in a course on baby-sitting.
4. Older children with special conditions or disabilities should not be left home alone.
All children should know:
1. The family emergency plan. (Fire escapes, 911, etc.)
2. How to demonstrate the emergency plan.
3. Where the parent’s phone numbers are for work and home, their home address, and how to give directions to emergency personnel.
4. Support systems in place, in case a parent cannot be reached. (Relatives or neighbors available.)
5. Whom to contact if there are language or cultural factors affecting the situation.
As much as they may complain about it, minor children—even youth—must have an adult monitoring their care while their parents are away. If you have any further questions, please contact Stephanie Schuette, the School Social Worker at this school.
