Weekly Staff Bulletin
October 12-16, 2015
Happy Friday Everyone,
We hope you all are enjoying a relaxing and calm three day weekend. You all have been doing such a fantastic job and deserve this time off.
Last Monday we had a visit from the State AVID Coordinator and HSD district office AVID Coordinator. They met with the Tyler, Joey, Cherylen, Katie and myself to talk about AVID at Poynter. From the minute they walked in they were instantly impressed. The team did a fantastic job describing our AVID program, it's growth, needs, and future including what everyone is doing school wide. The team then went and did a 15 minute visit to Sue's 6th period AVID class for 8th grade. Sue and her kids rocked it. Below are pictures. Comments made when they left were, "your school is impressive," "you are in GREAT shape", "keep it up, we love what we are seeing". Excellent Job AVID team.
On Wednesday, Roberto held a Latino parents night. Roberto, Norma, Joey, Katie, and myself attended. We had around 20 parents attend this event. Roberto did a super job discussing with parents the importance of involvement, high school readiness, what is needed for a high school diploma, homework, planners, and AVID. Joey, Roberto and Norma worked with the parents to set them up on Parent Vue. While we hoped for higher numbers it was encouraging and parents walked out thanking us. They asked excellent questions and really want to be more connected to our school. Congrats Roberto and his team.
None of this all could not have happened without the support and team work you provide for yourselves, our school, parents and most importantly for our kids. Keep up the great work! This is why Poynter is the best.
Best,
Jon and Katie

Coaches Corner
I had the opportunity this week to observe Dan Jones. In order for students to put into practice their understanding of an objective summary, he showed a Pixar Short called “Lifted”. The kids were 100% engaged, laughing and all, during the 5 minute video. After the video, students used the sentence frames they had written down earlier to create their summaries. Dan cold-called on students to read their introduction sentences. When they were done with their paragraph, they got out their summary rubrics, which they were already familiar with, to grade their own summaries, and to grade a classmate’s work. It was interactive and engaging for students. Good job Dan!
