Nurse Notes by Nurse Andrea

Well, it's amazing that we are talking about the end of the school year already! But there are some important things to discuss before summer vacation--please take a moment to see if any of these apply to your children.

If your child has ANY MEDICATION here at school int he health office, I will be sending out a form alerting you that we have medication here at school and that it will need to go home. You need to read this form, sign and return it by Monday, May 21st. This is what it will say: "No medication will be kept over the summer at school. All medications must be taken home by May 31st or they will be disposed of.

Most medications can be sent home with your child with your permission. However, any medication that is designated as a "controlled substance" (such as Ritalin, Adderall, Focalin, Cylert, Dexedrine) must be picked up by a parent up by a parent or other designated adult.

All over-the-counter medications must be taken home by the last day of school, May 31st. If you have children with medication here at school, look for this form. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the last weeks of school, please feel free to call Nurse Andrea at 952-496-5804.

Art Lines from Mr. Olson

Greetings from the Art Department!

It is hard to believe but the end of the year is fast approaching. This is always an exciting time of the year in the art room. I hope everyone had a great time at Literacy and Beyond Night (there are some photos from the night included below this article)! It is so much fun to bring our community together and see all of the smiles on the faces of children! I am lucky to have such a GREAT STAFF to collaborate withe each year! This enables our students to create great writing to go with their beautiful art work. I hope it finds a special place in your home : )!

Also, our third graders are taking their field trip to the Mpls. Institute of Arts this month on May 18th. They are going to have a great time exploring and seeing famous art work they have studied and hundreds of works that are new to them as well. Thank you to all the volunteers who make this trip a success. We would also like to thank the Jackson PTO for funding the 4 buses and making the trip possible. It is one of the few times the students get to go to an art museum during the years in the Shakopee Schools.

Mr. Olson

If you have a child that was interested in band for the 2018-19 school year (current 4th graders) they have been trying out instruments with Mrs. Beckler. Band Display Night is on Thursday, May 3rd from 4:00-7:30 pm at SunPath Elementary, we hope to see you there! If you have any questions feel free to email Carrie Beckler at cbeckler@shakopee.k12.mn.us..

Physical Education Fun with Mr. Casey, Mrs. Johanson, and Mrs. Tanberg

It is a busy time of year in Physical Education for Jackson Elementary students. With spring upon us, we are finishing our units, getting ready for fitness testing and preparing for Track and Field Dates. May is here and Jackson Elementary students will be busy preparing for our annual Track and Field Days. If you are new to Jackson Elementary School, track and field days are a day that we devote to one particular grade level. Students choose one event to participate in from each of our 3 different categories: Running, Field, and Team events. Ribbons are awarded to the top 6 finishers. Please check out our web site for additional information. The dates are:

  • Monday, May 7th for 1st Grade
  • Tuesday, May 8th for 2nd Grade
  • Wednesday, May 9th for 3rd Grade
  • Thursday, May 10th for 4th Grade
  • Friday, May 11th for 5th Grade

In honor of National PE & Sport Week

We are celebrating

National Bike/Walk to School Day on Friday, May 4th

* if inclement weather, event will not be rescheduled*

If your child lives in our surrounding neighborhoods they are encouraged to ride their bike/walk from home that morning. If your child does not live close enough to bike/walk, we are hosting a meeting spot so that everyone has the option to participate.

Arrive to the Shakopee Senior High West Parking lot between 7:50-7:55

Depart from utility house/batting cage area in small groups starting at 8:00

Route from Shakopee Senior High Parking Lot:

Approximately .7 miles long-majority completed on sidewalk/bike path.

Parents/guardians are to enter the Shakopee Senior High School west parking lot off of Fuller St/Koeper Ave. Take an immediate left into the parking lot area, stay to the outside of the lot (parallel with Koepper Ave) and continue to the utility house/batting cage area. If you are choosing to stay and participate with your child there is parking in the north lot area by the drop off site.

After your student is dropped off you will continue north to 17th Avenue and exit going east bound onto 17th Avenue. Please also do not make a loop and exit back onto Koepper Ave, we would like all traffic going the same direction onto 17th Avenue to ensure the safety of all.

Students will be taking the most direct route by starting from the parking lot gathering space to the adjacent 17th Avenue and going westbound. They will cross Koepper Ave/Fuller Street with the assistance of a police officer directing traffic and continue westbound on 17th Avenue. Students will cross 17th Avenue at Jackson Elementary entrance on Lusitano Street with the assistance of Police Officers and school crossing guards. Upon arrival at Jackson, students will store their bikes in the gym where they can enjoy a banana and juice.

If your child participates, you are responsible for either their ride home or for picking them up from school at the end of the day. Please park over in the cul-du-sac, up top or on the back street when picking them up as we need the bottom lot open for the busses. Also, PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD’S BIKE TAGGED with their first/last name and homeroom teacher. Have the attached sheet fully filled out and returned to your child’s classroom teacher.

· If you are picking up a bike, student or students, please go to the lower level gymnasium doors when school is out to pick them up. No need to check them out of the office. This slip is used in place of that. Thank you so much for the swift return of these forms.
