We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from the 6th Grade
The last few weeks have been an exciting time in ELA! The class read the novel, “The Crossover” about a boy, Josh, who has a twin brother named, Jordan. Both boys love to play basketball and are starting to grow-up as well as grow-apart. At the end of the unit, students took the AR Test over the book and everyone scored at an 80% or above!
We also began our March Madness: Road To the Final Four Competition! Each student is on one of 16 teams working to earn the most points each week to progress to the next round. In ELA, students earn 1 point for every 10 minutes read each night. They can also earn 2 points for any AR tests taken during the week. The first teams to progress to the Elite Eight were 16 Knockouts, Greenwich Goblins, Dallas Cowboys, Take 5, The Unknowns, Fire Breathing Norwals, The Ballerzzz, and Derp Clan. Even if a team does not progress, students can still win an individual prize. Currently we are in the Final Four week. 16 Knockouts, Greenwich Goblins, The Unknowns, and Derp Clan have all progressed as teams. Students are able to win several prizes including: a piece of candy, cookies, pop, ice cream sandwich, and the Champion team will win a pizza party during lunch on April 12th! The reasoning behind our March Madness Competition is to get students “Ready to Rock the Ohio State Tests” this coming April and May. They are on the “Road To the Final Four” because students will be taking tests in all four subject areas. Students will take the ELA Ohio State Test on Tuesday, April 4th and the ELA MAP test on April 25th or 26th. It is important for students get a good night’s rest the night before, eat a healthy breakfast, and come prepared to “Rock the Test” on each of these days! We have been practicing several testing strategies in class as well as having discussions on how these strategies will help them “in the real world” someday.
In Social Studies, we have just returned from a tour of Ancient India and China. We have learned about how these ancient civilizations began and all about their inventions, religious beliefs, farming, customs and government set up. Now, we turn our focus to types of government and some geography skills in order to get ready for our upcoming tests. In science, we recently finished learning about cells and all of the functions of the organelles inside. Next, we will be learning about heredity and how we inherit the characteristics we have.
In math the students have been working hard. We just finished up a unit on ratios and we are now working on understanding operations with fractions. The students are doing some fun activities with geoboards in class to help them better understand what fractions are! Next we will be looking at how fractions, decimals and percents are all connected. Look for some test prep material to come home in the upcoming weeks as we prepare for the state test in May. In this week’s Math March Madness tournament the Final Four teams to advance were the Fire Breathing Norwals, The Unknowns, The Greenwich Goblins and the 16 Knockouts.
In Art the 6th graders have finished up their ceramic monsters. 6th Grade "Ceramic Monsters" will be featured in South-Central's Fine Arts Festival on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Students created ceramic monsters using the following clay hand building techniques: slab, pinch pot, coil, slip, and score. Monsters were decorated using tempera paint and modge podge for a glossy seal. Sixth graders are currently working on creating cities using one-point linear perspective. Students reviewed how to create a horizon line and vanishing point and learned about the three points-of-view: worm's eye, eye level, and bird's eye. Students applied 3-5 buildings at "eye level" to appear like they are going back into the distance.
