Calling PLAEA science educators!

Professional Development for NEW Iowa Science Standards

Update about NEW Iowa Science Standards

Did you know that Iowa has adopted new science standards?

Perhaps you wonder how the science standards are different from the Iowa Core?

Maybe you wonder about what standards are to be taught at each grade level?

In order to support the implementation of the new Iowa Science Standards, several statewide professional development opportunities will be held over the next three years.

1) Iowa Standards Kick-Off! held on October 20th at the University of Iowa. National experts provided guidance to district leaders about the implementation of the new science standards and prepare leaders to support classroom implementation. The Iowa Standards Kick-Off! was live streamed and was recorded to view at a later date. Four videos of the presentations can be accessed at the Iowa Department of Education website link: https://www.educateiowa.gov/article/2015/10/21/videos-iowa-science-standards-kick

The topics of the four videos are:
1) Welcome remarks and National Overview: Multiple welcome remarks and Teresa Eliopoulos from Achieve, Inc. (19:27)
2) Implementation in Iowa and Overview of Iowa Roll-Out: Erika Cook, Bureau Chief of Standards and Curriculum
3) Lessons from California: Christopher Harris, SRI
4) Issues in Equity: Okhee Lee, NYU

Each PowerPoint presentation can be downloaded and are located under each video.

2) AEA Professional Development: Throughout the school year, science consultants across Iowa will lead a statewide professional development opportunity about the three-dimensional approach to science teaching and learning.

Dates in PLAEA are November 4, 5 and December 11 and 14. More details below.

3) Summer Symposium-Implementing the Standards: June 15-17,2016. Save the date for this teacher symposium. National experts will lead educators in job-alike groups. The goal is to give educators tools they need to implement the innovations in their practice.

This is a multi year roll out plan:
2015-2016 Exploration, Awareness, and Statewide Capacity Building
2016-2017 Classroom Transitions, Shifts, and Practices
2017-2018 Leveraging Materials, Resources and Expertise
2018-2019 Full K-12 Implementation (more information to come about expectations)

In addition, Prairie Lakes AEA will be offer additional professional development opportunities to foster a multi-fauceted approach to support implementation of the NEW Science Standards.
