Answering Documents

Some Students Thoughts

How do I really answer documents? The Australian Section Question1 Messages

1. Compare and contrast the message of Source 1 and Source 2. (4 marks)

Here, make sure to use the standard sentence, the sources are similar in that they....., however they are different in that they......

Then write a small paragraph comparing the messages of the sources, making sure to include quotes, symbolism, people, events etc that are shown in the source.

Then write a small paragraph about source 1: However, source 1 is different from source 2 in that its message focuses on.....

Then for the paragraph on source 2 say: Whereas, source 2 explores this....

*Make sure you use words such as however and whereas to contrast, it highlights to the marker you know what you are doing. It is VERY important, so important our teacher won't give us marks if we don't do it, to teach us it is essential for WACE.

2. Explain the historical context of Source 3. (4 marks)

just look at the date. Our teacher says as a general rule to talk about events that happened during the time, 5 yrs before and 5 after. However, this will depend on the amount of content you know and how much actually happened during this period of time. However, make sure the events you are looking at have some relevance to the source, even mention the brief idea in the source in order to relate that to the events.

3. Evaluate the usefulness of Source 4 and Source 5 as representations of ......

Standard sentence: Source 4 and 5 are useful to an extent as representations of....because they do this......

Then, referring to the sources themselves, look at how they focus on this particular idea and why it is so important, ie how does it impact on future events, how did past events create it. At the end, in about 2-3 sentences, make sure you say what the sources don't do, ie what events haven't been portrayed which are particularly suited to the idea in the question. ie: However, source 4 and 5 are only useful to an extent as they fail to demonstrate.....

The sources may also show bias or only one pov, so may be useful in that they represent one group's pov on the idea, yet fail to represent everyone
