Curriculum Corner

Language Arts

Grammar: We will spend the last few weeks reviewing all of the grammar concepts we have learned this year. We reviewed phrases today and were a little rusty!

Wordly Wise: 16 A&B will be due on Friday. 16 C&D will be due next Thursday, 5/19. Our final test of the year will be on Friday, 5/20.

WTW: We will have Words Their Way quizzes on Friday.

Writing: Almost everyone has finished their Famous Hoosier book. I am so proud of all of the hard work they put into them!

We are finishing our figurative language activities this week.

Indiana History

We will begin our last section of Indiana History on Friday covering Economics. The test over this section will be on Thursday, 5/19.

We began our final math unit on Monday. The kids always enjoy this one as they get to use reflective mirrors to explore symmetry of shapes. The unit assessment will take place on Monday, 5/23. It will cover the following concepts:

  • Drawing shapes with a specified number of lines of symmetry
  • Identifying translations, rotations, and reflections
  • Using a transparent mirror to draw a reflection
  • Equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents (from the chart I sent home last chapter)
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Adding positive and negative numbers
  • Identifying and measuring angles
  • Multiplying and dividing decimals

Famous Hoosiers

This is the week! Tomorrow will be our dress rehearsal in class. Students should bring their entire costume. We will change first thing in the morning, then each student will take a turn giving his/her speech to the class. I will be in the back to prompt them if they forget something! Thursday is the Wax Museum. We will be going to lunch and recess early (12:30-1:30) to give them time to change. The wax museum will open to younger students from 2:00-2:30 and parents/family members from 2:30-3:00. Please make sure you turn in your bright green transportation form so I know how students are going home at the end of the day!

As Stonegate has grown, we have noticed less and less space available for families at our award ceremony on the last day of school. This year, the award ceremony will be held for 4th grade students and families only. Our hope is that it will allow more space for parents and extended family to attend comfortable and will allow time for us to focus on the fourth graders and their accomplishments. Students should look nice for the ceremony, but are welcome to bring play clothes to change into for the rest of the day. This ceremony will take place at 9:45 am on May 26.

Graduation Caps

Speaking of graduation, students will wearing a white, felt graduation cap that they get to keep. It is a 4th grade tradition that they decorate their caps. Materials that work best include: fabric paint, ribbon, sequins, rhinestones, foam shapes, etc. We will begin decoring next week to allow plenty of drying time. I have some materials here, but you are more than welcome to send in additional materials either just for your child or to share with others.
