TMS Weekly Update 2019-2020
February 7th, 2020
February Blues
Cellphone Use at TMS
This is especially important when your child is texting you asking to be picked up due to illness. Students that are not feeling well should visit our school nurse for assessment and she will happily call the parents to discuss the student's health. If your child texts you to pick him/her up because they are not feeling well, you should not come to school until you have spoken to the school nurse.
From the Health Office
The TMS Health Office is still consistently seeing students with flu-like symptoms and additionally we are hearing of several new cases of confirmed flu each week.
Please see the attached information from the CDC regarding the flu. In order to reduce the transmission of flu among our student body - please take note of the following information on the form:
People with flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to up to 5 to 7 days after. Severely ill people or young children may be able to spread the flu longer, especially if they still have symptoms. If your child has the flu or you suspect your child has the flu, please keep your child home from school as long as possible to prevent transmission to others. Absences related to any illness will be medically excused with a doctor's note.
Can my child go to school, day care, or camp if he or she is sick? No. Your child should stay home to rest and to avoid spreading flu to other children or caregivers.
When can my child go back to school after having flu? Keep your child home from school, day care, or camp for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone. (The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) A fever is defined as 100°F (37.8°C)* or higher Please refer to the period of contagiousness stated above, it is best to allow your child to fully recover, even beyond the 24 hour fever free mark, to keep the school community healthy.
How can you prevent getting the influenza virus? The CDC and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is still advising the single best way to prevent the flu is vaccination of everyone six months of age and older.
What are some other ways I can protect my child against flu? In addition to getting a flu vaccine, you and your child should take everyday actions to help prevent the spread of germs. Stay away from people who are sick as much as possible to keep from getting sick yourself. If you or your child is sick, avoid others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Also, remember to regularly cover your coughs and sneezes, wash your hands often, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and clean surfaces that may be contaminated with flu viruses. These everyday actions can help reduce your chances of getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others if you are sick. However, a yearly flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu illness.
If your child is diagnosed with the flu or any other communicable disease (strep throat, conjunctivitis, Hand Foot mouth disease, Fifth's disease etc.) Please contact Michelle Riley at the TMS Health Office to notify. Michelle can be reached at 978-649-3115 option 2.
Thank you

Officer KIND Project Rebooted for Term II
“The Officer Kind Project”
The Officer Kind Project is back! Originally created by Officer Bonczar, the program’s purpose is to showcase the thoughtfulness and kind nature of our student body. More importantly, it is designed to recognize individual students for selflessness and thoughtfulness. This project will once again help us shine light on the core values of the school and identify kind acts that otherwise may have gone unnoticed.
Last trimester, the program ran successfully and three deserving students were selected per grade as the winners. In fact, the participation was so great that we also selected five students for honorable mention as well. We encourage all staff and teachers to please take part in this project. The input we received from the student population as well as the staff really allowed us to shed light on the school’s core values at work. If you know of a student that has gone above and beyond, please don’t hesitate to nominate that student by filling out a “Kindness Ticket” and place it in the labeled box located outside the main office. This second run of the program is currently active and will end on February 9th.
If you have any questions regarding the project, please feel free to reach out to us at the following:

Snowshoe Anyone?
Why snowshoeing? This activity is a lifestyle activity that can be done throughout the years, is low impact, and a great way to get outside during those long winter months! It utilizes cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and balance. Students are learning that being physically active does not require traditional team sport participation; they can be physically fit in a variety of ways!
We ask that if you have snowshoes to donate for students, please bring them in to the front office!
