Mr. B's Corner

There are only 9 weeks, or one-quarter, of this school year remaining. This leaves a very large swath of time left for students to dive into their negotiated workplans, enjoy the spring weather, and prepare for summer fun.


Last week, I discussed many inquiry ideas that students have shared and this week it has been fun to see those ideas take shape as students develop and research their questions. As part of this learning, one of the most difficult elements of depth and complexity for students to wrap their heads around is “Unanswered Questions.” It is hard to accept that one has worked hard to discover the answers, but even so, the answers have eluded the researcher. This, however, is where the greatest learning occurs-we need to know what we don’t know! Years back, Lighthouse Facilitator Emeritus, Rick Fletcher, shared a book “Ignorance” with me that illuminated this very notion. The author Stuart Firestein shares, “Knowledge is a big subject, but ignorance is a bigger one. And it is ignorance--not knowledge--that is the true engine of science.” I love this notion!


Stuart Firestein further shares, “Next time you meet a scientist — at a dinner party, at your child’s school, just by chance — don’t ask her to explain what she does. Ask her what she’s trying to figure out.” This notion is a great way to discuss inquiries with your child too. Next time you discuss inquiry with your child-don’t ask them to explain what they are doing, ask them what they are trying to figure out.


We do have many copies of “Ignorance” that students are welcome to check out if they are looking for a non-fiction book challenge.

Health Reminder

Please continue daily health screenings before sending students to school. If your child has any symptoms, they need to stay home. We are all tracking news of variants and their spread. We ask that everyone remain diligent to help keep learning going at school with as few interruptions as possible.

Physical Education and Health Update

This trimester the students that have chosen the in-person learning model will be participating in Phy Ed classes at school.


This is aligned with the recommendations from the Minnesota Department of Health updated on 3/26/21:

  • Physical education classes may continue to be held indoors outside of individual classrooms so long as students and staff are wearing face coverings.
  • Whenever possible, hold physical education and music classes outside and encourage participants to spread out. Consider using visual cues to demonstrate physical spacing.
  • Face coverings must be worn when engaging in indoor physical activity (e.g., during indoor recess, indoor physical education class, or when exercising in a gym).


We will be holding classes outside whenever the weather permits. Please send an extra mask or two to school with students on the days that they have Phy Ed class as they can become wet and uncomfortable when exercising.

  • Grades 1-4: Tuesdays and Fridays
  • Grade 5: Tuesdays
  • Grades 6-8: Fridays

Students that have chosen the EFL learning model will continue to have Phy Ed asynchronously through Schoology.


Health will continue to be held asynchronously through Schoology for all students in Grades 1-8.


PE Take-Home Bags

  • In-person students: PE take-home bags (including pedometers) should be returned to school. (Arrange a time with Ms. Dougherty for drop-off.)
  • EFL students: Keep PE take-home bags at home until the end of the year.

Summer Enrichment Opportunities

Dear Gifted Services families,


Summer will be here before we know it. Students may wish to participate in an enrichment learning opportunity during the summer. Therefore Gifted Services has compiled a list of opportunities that you might like to check out. Some of the classes are in-person whereas others are being offered virtually. Fees for the classes are listed within the website descriptions with some offering classes for free. Links have been provided in the two documents below.

SLP Schools Online: Complete interest form for 2021-2022

As we expand Spring Lake Park Schools' online school to grades K-12, we're gauging interest from current families in the district for the 2021-2022 school year. SLP Schools Online is fully online school experience in which students cover the same concepts as their in-school peers but tailored to an online environment. Bike Helmet Fitting & Sale

The Spring Lake Park, Blaine and Mounds View (SBM) Fire Department is hosting a Bike Helmet Fitting & Sale on Tuesday, April 20 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m.-noon at the SBM Fire Station.


Bike helmets will be sold for $10 each. Various colors and sizes are available for the whole family. Bring your helmets from home to have them adjusted for free.
