TEKS Resource Conference: San Antonio, Texas
Alice ISD will be sending 2 representatives from each campus to attend the 2016 TEKS Resource Conference in San Antonio being held June 14 - 16. This conference offers educators the opportunity to hone their teaching skills, develop a deeper understanding of their state standards, and gain insight into the valuable resources found within the Texas Curriculum Management Program Cooperative (TCMPC). The TCMPC is a shared service agreement between the 20 Education Service Centers (ESCs) of Texas, which provides content and support for an online curriculum management system known as the TEKS Resource System. The system includes curriculum components, an assessment item bank, and content specific resources aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) adopted by the State Board of Education for the following subject areas:
- English Language Arts and Reading (K-12)
- Spanish Language Arts and Reading (K-5)
- Mathematics (K-12)
- Science (K-12)

**Alice ISD educators who are attending the conference please check your email regularly to keep up-to-date about your registration, travel and hotel arrangements.
Keynote Speaker at TEKS Resource Conference
This year’s keynote speaker will be “America’s Educator,” Ron Clark, the 2000 Disney American Teacher of the Year, a two-time New York Times Bestselling author, the subject of a television movie and the founder of The Ron Clark Academy. Ron is regularly featured on network and cable television (The Today Show, CNN and Oprah) and was dubbed by Ms. Winfrey as her first “Phenomenal Man.” Ron Clark’s personality is marked by a sense of challenge and adventure. We are excited to have the opportunity to hear this talented and renowned educator share his story.
Education Service Center Region 2 ELAR Training
Thanks to funding from our Texas Literacy Initiative, ELAR educators will be part of interactive workshops that are designed to provide them with grade and genre specific text guides filled with guiding questions, focus points, and STAAR Connections for each mentor text they receive. Teachers will receive one grade level set of mentor texts and texts guides for each genre. The components of quality read alouds and think alouds will be reviewed and modeled as well.

Texas Literacy Initiative Summer Institute
(1) Infancy to School Entry, (2) Kindergarten to Grade 5, and (3) Grade 6 to Grade 12. The TSLP supports educators in effectively teaching our state standards. Although the initial focus of the TSLP was on disadvantaged students, it can be used to advance the learning of all students. This summer participants will choose sessions that are tied to the either the Leadership Strand or the Classroom Strand. The following are descriptions of the sessions offered:
Ages 0-2 Classroom Strand:
The ages 0-2 sessions are intended for teachers and administrators who work with infants and toddlers. Using the theme of exploration, we will explore ideas and strategies to support early development and language in creative, developmentally appropriate ways.
Prekindergarten - Grade 12 Classroom Strand:
These sessions will focus on the importance of and need for providing explicit instruction. Participants will become familiar with and explore several elements related to explicit instruction based on Anita Archer's work - including Foundations, Lesson Design, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Delivery.
Leadership Strand:
This session will explore how an instructional system communicated by a leader affects student learning. This work will include making connections between the TSLP, principal standards, teacher standards, and Explicit Instruction.

What Great Teachers do Differently by Whittaker
Preventing the "Summer Slide" for Teachers
While it is greatly important for teachers to rest and relax over the summer, I always found that to be the time my creative juices started flowing (after a few days of zoning out!). During summer I always started evaluating my lessons, looking for new ideas and studying what I could do better.
So, here are a few ideas for you.
Start by looking at what you did last year. Think about what didn't go quite as planned and really evaluate why. Was it materials, unclear directions, poor planning on my part? What can be done to make that better.
Next, really study those skills that must be taught. Are their any nuances that may have been missed? Was specificity covered? Did the materials really match the objective closely?
Finally, think about those things you wanted to accomplish, but just didn't make happen. Start planning now for getting that done.
Don't forget to look for ideas everywhere, peruse websites, Pinterest, blogs. Ideas are everywhere. Remember to share with others and take a little time away to enjoy the moment! Time will fly.
