Selena Gomez - Mini Biography

Coming of Age

Selena's determination and passion for acting, as well as her mother's acting background, led her to become the singer and actor she is today.
When Selena was younger, she would go to her mother's plays and rehearsals. She would read lines with her and give her tips on how to improve her performance. This is when Selena finally realized her love for acting. when she was 7 years old, Selena found out about an audition for Barney and Friends, where she competed against 1400 other children for a spot on the show. She landed the role of Gianna, whom she played until she was 9. Selena learned a lot of what she knows about acting from her years on Barney.
When Selena was 10 years old, she found out about a Disney casting call. She begged her mom to take her, and her mom finally agreed. Disney loved Selena, and put her in two pilot episodes as spin offs of popular Disney TV shows, though neither aired. She guest starred as Gwen in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody , and played Mikayla in Hannah Montana. Selena was dedicated to her Disney career, and moved to L.A. in 2007. Disney decided Selena needed a starring role, so they told her to audition for Wizards of Waverly Place. She had to audition three times to get the part. Her Wizards career led to her singing the theme song, and several songs for her soundtrack, and eventually Disney decided to continue Selena's music career by giving her her own band, and she released her first album in 2009. She has released 4 albums over her time as a singer.
Even though Selena's Wizards career is long over, she still continues to prosper as an actress and singer, through her movie and solo album projects. She truly is dedicated to the arts, and will always remember her love for acting.

Without her mother to be there to introduce her to theater, Selena would have never known what acting was like. Running lines with her mother made her realize how much she loved performing. Also, her mom understood Selena's passion, so she was willing to drive her to rehearsals, take her to auditions, and eventually move to L.A.. But Selena's mom was only part of the reason Selena is the popular actress today. Selena's own dedication was a big part of it. Selena had to beg her mom to come to some of her auditions, and she even moved 3 hours and 15 minutes (of nonstop plane flight) from Austin, TX to L.A., CA. (3 hours and 15 minutes of nonstop plane flight). Without her love for the arts, she would have quit a while ago. However, she is still working on new projects, with two movies coming out this year! This shows that Selena is extremely committed to her career.

Selena Gomez may be a busy singer and actress, but she still found time to participate in the National Geographic Society's Great Nature Project by taking pictures of her dogs in nature. See what else she has to say about getting outside, her pooches, and her debut solo album.

National Geographic Kids: You took photos for the Great Nature Project, which encourages kids to get outside. Why is that important?

Selena Gomez: Exploring nature allows you to grow. If you're stuck in front of your computer or playing video games all day, you won't see all of the amazing things the world has to offer. Plus, getting outside is fun!

NGK: What are your favorite things to do outside?

SG: I love hiking because you're surrounded by wildlife. Swimming in the ocean is also great, especially when it's hot. I could hang out all day in the water.

NGK: Do your six dogs get outside a lot too?

SG: Absolutely. I love swimming with them. I just have to watch out for when they shake off all the water!

NGK: Where's your favorite place outside to spend time?

SG: My backyard! It's the best--and it proves that you don't need to travel far to experience the world. Cool things are waiting for you literally right outside your door.

NGK: Have you had any awe-inspiring moments in nature?

SG: Traveling to Ghana, Africa, was life-changing. I loved soaking up the landscapes and talking with people.

NGK: Is there a place you haven't explored yet but would like to?

SG: I can't wait to visit New Zealand and Ireland. They both have gorgeous green environments.

NGK: Your debut solo album, Stars Dance, came out last summer. What's your favorite song from the album?

SG: It's called B.E.A.T. The rhythm is really energetic--it makes you want to get out on the dance floor.

NGK: What advice would you give kids, no matter what their dreams are?

SG: Give yourself time to figure out your passion. Then find out everything you can about your dream career and how to get it. Be prepared to do some hard work--but also be prepared to have a lot of fun.

NGK: Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?

SG: Don't let tiny setbacks get you down. Instead let them fuel your motivation. And make sure to surround yourself with good friends who make you laugh. If you have that, everything will be OK!
