Primary Source
Selena Gomez may be a busy singer and actress, but she still found time to participate in the National Geographic Society's Great Nature Project by taking pictures of her dogs in nature. See what else she has to say about getting outside, her pooches, and her debut solo album.
National Geographic Kids: You took photos for the Great Nature Project, which encourages kids to get outside. Why is that important?
Selena Gomez: Exploring nature allows you to grow. If you're stuck in front of your computer or playing video games all day, you won't see all of the amazing things the world has to offer. Plus, getting outside is fun!
NGK: What are your favorite things to do outside?
SG: I love hiking because you're surrounded by wildlife. Swimming in the ocean is also great, especially when it's hot. I could hang out all day in the water.
NGK: Do your six dogs get outside a lot too?
SG: Absolutely. I love swimming with them. I just have to watch out for when they shake off all the water!
NGK: Where's your favorite place outside to spend time?
SG: My backyard! It's the best--and it proves that you don't need to travel far to experience the world. Cool things are waiting for you literally right outside your door.
NGK: Have you had any awe-inspiring moments in nature?
SG: Traveling to Ghana, Africa, was life-changing. I loved soaking up the landscapes and talking with people.
NGK: Is there a place you haven't explored yet but would like to?
SG: I can't wait to visit New Zealand and Ireland. They both have gorgeous green environments.
NGK: Your debut solo album, Stars Dance, came out last summer. What's your favorite song from the album?
SG: It's called B.E.A.T. The rhythm is really energetic--it makes you want to get out on the dance floor.
NGK: What advice would you give kids, no matter what their dreams are?
SG: Give yourself time to figure out your passion. Then find out everything you can about your dream career and how to get it. Be prepared to do some hard work--but also be prepared to have a lot of fun.
NGK: Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?
SG: Don't let tiny setbacks get you down. Instead let them fuel your motivation. And make sure to surround yourself with good friends who make you laugh. If you have that, everything will be OK!
