Dear Tashua Families,

This week, we had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Week at Tashua! On Monday, we turned out the lights and the students enjoyed their instruction in natural lighting to conserve energy. On Tuesday, classroom teachers gathered their students outside for some fresh-air learning. On Wednesday, students were able to experience a virtual field trip of traveling to 5 different National Parks to learn about the importance of protecting these beautiful landscapes. On Thursday, we celebrated Earth Day by wearing green and enjoying a Meatless Lunch Day! Delicious yogurt parfaits were enjoyed by our students. Thank you, Ms. Sue, Ms. Donna, and Ms. Michelle for this special treat! Finally, on Friday, students brought in empty cans to REUSE as wildflower planters. A huge thank you goes out to Ms. Kelly, Ms. Kenler and Mrs. Weitzman for planning all of these events!

In the first week of May, we will begin to administer the Smarter Balanced Assessments to students in grades 3-5. The SBAC Assessments will expose students to Common Core English/ Language Arts questions and Mathematics problems. In addition to the SBAC assessments, our students in grade 5 will be taking the NGSS Science Field Test.

SBAC Testing Schedule

Grades 3 - 5

English Language Arts

Tuesday 5/4 & Wednesday 5/5

Mathematics

Tuesday 5/11 & Wednesday 5/12

Mathematics Performance Task

Thursday 5/13

Science Testing - Grades 5

NGSS - Science Field Test

Tuesday 5/18 & Wednesday 5/19

We hope students will not be absent during the testing period, except for illness, and that they will strive to do their very best! These SBAC assessments are administered to measure the academic growth of individual students from year to year and results are used to develop targeted instructional plans for students.

Here are some ways you can help us from home:

  • Make sure your child arrives to school on time. If he or she is late, your child will not be able to enter the classroom until testing is done for the day. A make-up test will be given at another time by one of the specialists so your child will miss classroom instruction.
  • Make sure your child has a nutritious breakfast. Even toast and a piece of fruit will provide the body and brain energy.
  • Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Most children need at least 10 hours of sleep each night. Children cannot do their best work when they are tired.
  • Let your child know that you expect him or her to try their very best.

Some children can become so worried about taking a test that they cannot demonstrate what they know. Telling your child not to worry just will not work. Instead, share these tips:

  • Tell your child to remember past tests where he or she did well and remind your child that he or she can do well again!
  • Reassure your child. Let your child know that all you expect is his or her best effort.

If you would like to learn more about the Smarter Balanced assessments, you can log onto: www.smarterbalanced.org.

As a school community, we have been busy this week planning for some special end of year events. Our One Book, One School Event will kick off on Monday, May 3rd. We are excited to reveal the title of the book with our families! The youngest child of your family will be coming home with a parent letter, hard copy of the book, and a reading calendar that afternoon. If your child is a TRL, you can pick up the materials that day. The title of the book will be a surprise for the students, therefore books will not be available prior to our One Book, One School Kick-off. As a family you can enjoy this book by reading together nightly or having your family members enjoy listening to the pre-recorded readings of each chapter that have been read by staff members. These readings will be posted on our website.

Further, many grade levels are working to plan in-school or virtual field trips. We are also planning a Field Day experience for our students. Our students in grades 3-5 students will have Field Day on Thursday, May 27th (Rain date 6/3) and students in grades K-2 will have Field Day on Friday, May 28th (Rain date 6/4). In addition, our grade 5 students will be able to participate in the annual field trip to the YMCA on Tuesday, 6/8.

Please be sure to fill out the TPS volunteer form by the end of next week if you have any interest in offering to volunteer for these events. Your completed form must be processed ASAP with time to receive a confirmation from DCF which can take up to four weeks. All forms must be original with an original signature. No emailed or faxed forms will be accepted. If forms are filled out incorrectly or missing information, they will be returned.

In order to avoid delays, please be sure to:

· Fill out both sides of the form

· Complete all sections

· If there is no information to provide, please write “N/A” (do not leave blank)

· Have other adults in the home include their signatures where applicable
