The District's Fifth Grade Cross Country Run
The last Run Club meeting will be this Monday, October 14. There will not be Run Club practice this Tuesday, October 15th. We want to rest the runners for the big Wednesday run over at West HIgh School.
The 5th grade spirit wear t-shirts will be given out to students who have ordered them on Tuesday. We would like everyone to wear the t-shirts on Wednesday to show our runners our support for the race.
Traffic at West High School is always a concern on race day. Please be careful and courteous when driving into the venue and parking. The main entrance to the high school will be the only way in and out because of how the race is set up. Police officers will be on site to help with traffic control. We need everyone to be patient and aware of runners and spectators at all times. The safety of the runners and spectators should be the priority. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Our Learning
The workshops for Reading, Writing and Math are being established. The district wide workshop model includes whole group mini lessons, small guided groups and application time for practice. The kids are doing a great job getting in these routines.
Literacy:
Our first unit in reading will focus on community, integrating social studies and literacy. We are in the process of learning about various communities around the world and what impacts them! Literature Discussion Groups are in progress and the kids are loving the books.
Also during literacy, we are participating in Word Study. This is a program that is not the traditional way to teach spelling. We will look at the roots of words and studying patterns. Please see the attached letter for more information.
Math
We will be starting Unit 2, and the following are the major concepts that will be covered over the next several weeks will be:
- Adding and subtracting decimals
- Multiplication of whole numbers and decimals
- Division of whole numbers and decimals
I can targets for students will be:
- I can add and subtract decimals using effective strategies.
- I can multiply using the standard algorithm.
- I can multiply decimals using effective strategies.
- I can solve multi-digit division problems using effective strategies.
- I can divide decimals using effective strategies.
Students have established their routines with math workshop and has been is in full swing. Please remember to check with you student's assignment notebook to make sure he or she stays current with the math work.
Matific
The students also have started to explore Matific, the new online math program. Matific replaces TenMarks, and so far the kids really have enjoyed working with it. Since it is brand new not only to students, but to the classroom teachers, too, we all will be learning the "bells & whistles" of this program.
School Counselor, Mrs. Edwards
This month the School Counseling Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson addressed bully prevention techniques. These include when to approach an adult, use of I-messages and assertiveness skills. Students worked to identify behaviors that constitute bully behavior, how to handle these situations and when to seek assistance. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
