A Message from Mrs. Figueroa

We are well into the month of May Thank you the PTA for a wonderful Spring Family Day! I enjoyed meeting many of you and seeing your children have fun in the bouncy houses and playing the various games.

Your child has been hard at work this week. As I walk into the classrooms, I love hearing the conversations around units of capacity, shapes, information about animals or famous people and how to be a good friend.

This week our 4th grade students will be taking part in the New York State Science Performance Assessment. Please ensure that your child is here on time each day. The assessment will be throughout the week for each class. The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, May 24th Mr. Carneiro's class 4-313

Wednesday, May 25th Mrs. DiFilippi's class 4-317

Thursday, May 26th Mrs. Cannata's class 4-318

Friday, May 27th Mrs. Gogna and Mrs. Zaraei class 4-316

School begins at 8:00 a.m. The doors at the main building open at 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. at the Annex. We have allotted a ten minute window for students to arrive to school without being marked late. Students that arrive after 8:10 a.m. will be marked late. We need your help getting your children to school on time. Every minute counts!

Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey that will help us plan for the rest of the year and next year.

I hope to see you all at our next Coffee and Conversations at 10:00 a.m. We will be discussing the Gifted and Talented program here at P.S. 188Q and hearing from some of the parents that have children in our program. The Department of Education is hosting live virtual events on May 24, May 26, and June 1 for families to provide more information about this year's G&T admissions process. For event times and interpretation details, visit schools.nyc.gov/ESEvents.

Here's to a great week ahead!

District 26 "I Am" Project

As members of the District 26 community, we would like you to consider participating in this great project.

Since 2016, we have continued as a District Community to grow and learn from this work in many ways together. In response to the feedback we received from our students in our DEL Student Survey in the Spring 2021, we want to continue to build understanding of cultural awareness and racial identities by recreating the "I Am" Project video to share who the District 26 community is in 2022.

We welcome all members of District 26 - students, staff, families, and community members - to share their response to one or more of the following prompts in a short video:

  • Who are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • How do you want to be known?
  • What means most to you?
  • What you aspire to achieve?

Ending your video ultimately saying: “I am (one word)”

Please ensure your video is:

Compiled videos will be shared with the community in June 2022 with a guide to deepen conversations with each other towards our shared goals and commitments. Thank you for your support in continuing this work with us and in sharing it with the community.

How to Apologize

As students continue to build relationships and work in their classrooms on the next Socio-Emotional Learning Unit, it is important to go over with your child HOW to apologize if they have done something wrong and feel the need to apologize. Take a look at the sentence stems below that will help your child apologize in a meaningful manner. Remember, an apology should NOT be forced and they should want to apologize for something they feel they have done wrong.
