Engaging Students with Poverty In Mind- Engage for Positive Climate
1- Raise the Bar- Have high expectations. Students typically live out their own expectations, so effective teachers get students to expect more of themselves.
2- Manage Mind-Body States- Students' thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and academic performance correlate with their physical, emotional and cognitive states. You as the teacher need to help the students manage their states in order for learning to take place.
3- Establish that "We are Family"-Student-teacher relationships have are in the top 10 of all student achievement factors. Creating a family-like atmosphere in your classroom will reduce discipline problems and improve learning.
4- Sustain Emotional Positivity- Emotional positivity is essential to learning and productivity. To maintain the positive atmosphere and maintain human growth, you should give at least 3 positive comments to every 1 negative comment to students.
5- Teach positive social and emotional responses- Make it your mission to teach appropriate social and emotional responses. This is for the students and for your sanity too. :)
While I feel that all of you have done a great job creating positive learning environments, we always have room to improve. I will place a copy of this chapter on the Google Drive and share it with you. Please take the time to read the chapter. You may learn a new strategy to create an even stronger classroom environment.
