Third grade day at the Zoo!
Elaine Imlau
Dear Windsor Families,
After 21 amazing years here at Windsor and 34 in the Des Moines schools I have decided to retire. It was a difficult decision that I reached in just the last month. I have really enjoyed working here and am very proud of all we have accomplished together. My art teacher colleagues are always very envious at the level of parent/family support and involvement we have here, particularly with the Windsor Art Festival.
On the topic of the Windsor Art Festival due to having to clean out for the new art teacher and all classes currently working on earthenware clay projects, the art festival will not be a big production as in the past. We will display 2D work by every student in the halls for most of May. It will be up for families to see when they come for field day.
I hope in the future your devoted support will continue for the new art teacher whomever that will be. I will always remember my time here at Windsor as a highlight of my teaching career. Thanks again for all you have done to support the arts at Windsor.
Counselors Corner
Hello, Windsor Wildcat Families,
This last month of school is going to be action-packed for sure. I wanted to share a few things with you as we approach the end of the school year.
5th Grade – 6th Grade Transition
We understand that this time of change from elementary to middle school is an exciting time for some and nerve-wracking for others. Since millions of kids have made the switch to middle school over the years, there is no reason that these 5th graders can’t be successful. We will talk about a class schedule and practice locker combinations (among other things) over the coming month.
Each school has its own Parent and Student Orientation nights this spring. Please check your child’s middle school’s website for more information.
This August, the DMPS Success program will host an activity called Success for 6th Grade at each middle school. It is free. It is a great way for students to get used to their new middle school, meet new kids, and see some familiar faces as well. Nearly all my past 5th graders highly recommend going. Some of you have already turned in the permission form. I have blanks on the wall just outside my office. You can also visit your middle school’s website for more information.
Any paperwork that needs to be given to the middle schools can be returned to me by the last day of school. I will forward it on. Past the last day of school, you will need to submit forms directly to the middle school.
Middle School websites follow:

Backpack Buddies
Backpack Buddies will continue until the last week of school. We will not have sacks available this summer. Hopefully we will resume the program in August.
Summer Feeding Program
Typically, DMPS offers a summer feeding program at no cost to children. That information (location, times, and other matters) is put on the DMPS main webpage (www.dmschools.org).
List of Community Resources
Should family needs arise now and over the summer and you need assistance, feel free to click the following link to receive a listing of community resources.
Being an Upstander
We’ve been getting reports of students who are witnessing other students being mean but instead of doing nothing, they reach out to the target, befriend them, and offer their help. I am so proud of our students when they step up to protect and help others who are vulnerable. We need more responses like this – kids being upstanders. Kids helping the target and standing up to a bully (without being aggressive) to create boundaries of acceptable behavior.
Please let me know how I can be of help to you and your family.
Take good care,
