DMS News November 2017
Principal's Corner
Panther Families,
There are so many great things happening at DMS! We are so proud of our students and faculty and the wonderful accomplishments that are achieved daily.
Our DMS Concert Band wowed us with a great performance at the Cobwebs and Cocoa Concert! It was a great time of festive music and snacks for all in attendance. While the band was entertaining upstairs, our DMS Panther Basketball kicked off their first home games against Athens in the gym! It was an exciting night for DMS!
We are eagerly preparing for our upcoming Veteran's Day program on November 9th to honor those who serve our country. Many of our students will demonstrate their gratitude through music, song and leadership. Remember November 9th is also a half day of school. We will dismiss at 11:45. No school on Friday, November 10th.
Once again our school will be working together to raise money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Our NJHS students have been working in our carline to receive donations in our "Buckets of Change". Additionally, we will be hosting a Penny Drop Contest between our 7th and 8th students. Please join us as we work to support this charity. If you would like to donate directly to the Discovery Team, please do so at this link. Donate to St. Jude Here
Thanks for your continued support of the students, faculty and staff of Discovery!
With Panther Pride,
Kim Stewart

Teacher Spotlights
Coach Jackson is preparing students in his Career Prep for the real world by exploring a lesson that shows students how to fill out a job application and prepare for a job interview. During the interview process, Coach Jackson serves as the employer and asks questions such as “What are some of your weaknesses?” and “How would you handle an unsatisfied/unruly customer?” After a series of questions, Coach Jackson ends the interview by evaluating the “job applicants” skills and offering him/her the job. DMS students are ready for the real world thanks to Coach Jackson!
In Mrs. Bagwell’s Advanced Art class, the students just finished researching “Dia De Los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead”, a Mexican holiday that celebrates the life of the dead. The research process led them to the discovery of "Sugar Skulls", a skull made of sugar and a few other ingredients, that represents the loved one who has passed on. One thing that makes sugar skulls stand out from other skull-related creations is how festive it looks. The aim is to capture the joy and spirit of their deceased loved ones. The students are in the beginning stages of creation and will return next week to add symbolic color and other features. Kudos to Mrs. Bagwell for mixing the arts, sculpting, and research in such a creative way!
