Building strong bones
Absorb a little vitamin D each day!
What does Vitamin D do?
Vitamin D maintains levels of calcium and phosphorus in blood. It makes calcium available for proper growth.
Major sources of this nutrient
The body makes some Vitamin D through the action of sunlight on the skin. Milk is also a very strong example of Vitamin D, milk helps build strong bones.
Too much or too little Vitamin D?
Too much Vitamin D can have serious health effects, including nausea, vomitting, and hardening of soft body tissues. If not enough consumption of this nutrient, it could lead to rickets, or osteomalcia. With both diseases bones are weak and sometimes deformed. Extra sun exposure doesn't produce Vitamin D, it can acutally cause skin damage.
Interesting facts
- A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.
- 40% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient.
- The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. states are far from the equator.
