Author Visit - Michael Patrick O'Neill

Award-winning photographer and author, Michael Patrick O'Neill will be visiting Vernfield on May 17! He has written and photographed seven non-fiction marine life books designed to encourage school children to read, write and become involved in science and conservation. They have received outstanding reviews from School Library Journal and are distributed nationally in the educational system. To learn more about his books, please visit Batfish Books.

All seven of his books, which are available for purchase (signed and personalized), will be on display in the library to view ahead of time. Order forms, which came home in communicators on Tuesday 4/3, are due with payment on Friday, April 20.

Box Tops Update

Ok the final push is on! March Box Tops numbers are in with ONE month left to go until final calculations are made and winner is announced!

Fourth grade is still in the lead with 2,647! Next closest grade on their tail is first grade at 2,010; followed next by third grade with 1,422; second grade with 1,410; fifth grade with 1,005 and kindergarten with 535. Thanks again to all of you taking the time to clip that dime and sending them in with your students. Thanks also to the volunteers sorting, counting and bagging them up.

One more push to the end…who will be the winner? Final counts should be in to your student’s pod by the last week of April to ensure that they get counted before the May deadline. Good Luck!

Book of the Month

This year, Home and School has been supporting a Character Counts Book of the Month Program. Each month, a special book is chosen that highlights a particular character trait. A copy of the book is purchased for each classroom so it can be enjoyed by all of the students in the school.

This month's book is called After the Fall by Dan Santat. Please see the description below:

Everyone knows that when Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. But what happened after? Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat's poignant tale follows Humpty Dumpty, an avid bird watcher whose favorite place to be is high up on the city wall―that is, until after his famous fall. Now terrified of heights, Humpty can no longer do many of the things he loves most. Will he summon the courage to face his fear? After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again) is a masterful picture book that will remind readers of all ages that Life begins when you get back up.

First in Math Update from Mrs. Kling

Breaking news:

Vernfield is moving closer to second place in the school district. We just need a little push to move Salford Hills out of the way. As a school we’ve solved 3,121,236 math problems so far. We are on target to break all of our old records with First in Math.

The top K-2 team for the week is Mrs. DiPietro’s second grade with +2,265 stickers and the top 3-5 team is Mrs. Donovan’s fifth grade class with +9,037 stickers.

The top K-2 player for the week is Adam in Mrs. Raisner's second grade with +386 and the top 3-5 player is Teoman from Mrs. Donovan’s fifth grade class with + 847 stickers.

Elizabeth is the top player of the month with + 2,534 stickers.

Vernfield is almost past the top 50% of the nation coming in at 52nd place in the nation, 21st in the state of PA and holding 3rd but pushing for second in the school district.

Keep up the great work.

Mrs. Kling
