Conferences are on their way!

As we approach the end of the quarter next week, fall conferences are right around the corner. The nights of conferences are Thursday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 12th. Both nights conferences will occur from 4:30-8:00PM. Families with students in grades 4-6 will be scheduling conferences online this year through Skyward. Please look for information about scheduling conferences in an email from Mr. Russ next week as well as a paper note being sent home. 7th and 8th grade teachers will be having "arena style" conferences in the gym on Thursday, November 7th and scheduled conferences in classrooms on Tuesday, November 12th.

As I mentioned in last week's smore, please check your child's progress in advance of conferences so that more time can be spent on goal setting for continued success or improvement.

On a related note, Miss Luberda and Mrs. Monson, our PE teachers who are shared between the Primary and Intermediate Schools, will be in the Intermediate School on Thursday, November 7th and at the Primary School on Tuesday, November 12th if you need to meet with them. Mrs. Gliniecki, our art teacher, will be at the Intermediate School on Thursday, November 7th.

Writer's and Reader's Workshop

As most of you know, Merton has adopted Writer's Workshop for Language Arts classes and many of our Language Arts teachers also use Reader's Workshop. A typical Language Arts workshop class has a mini-lesson, a chance for students to practice what was learned in the mini-lesson, and possibly another mini-lesson or a chance to confer with either a student or the teacher about their writing or reading. I have the pleasure of being in classrooms every day to see this in action and I am blown away by both the teachers and the students. The teachers have really immersed themselves into the workshop model while the students are writing and reading more than I can ever remember. If you have a moment, ask your child about their reading and writing. You might be surprised by what they share with you.

No School Thursday or Friday

This is just a reminder that there is no school Thursday, October 24th or Friday, October 25th for our students. Teachers are in meetings all day on Thursday, October 24th for professional development. Teachers will have a vacation day on Friday, October 25th.
