Student Voice

This past Thursday three of our DSA juniors attended the Greater Boston Regional Student Advisory Council at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Malden; Devon Lewis Thompson, Keliane DaRosa and Francilliana Barbosa. The students did an incredible job representing DSA and the Boston Public Schools. They have signed on to be active members of the Health and Wellness Committee providing feedback on the MA Curriculum Frameworks currently being revised and the Environmental and Sustainability Committee. Our amazing students have a voice in shaping state educational policy.

Brilliant Career Lab Director on board...

We are pleased to announce that Jemuel Stephenson has been hired as our Brilliant Career Lab Director. Jemuel will also have some responsibilities within the technology world at the Dearborn. Jemuel is no stranger to the Dearborn as he has been here all year helping us get students and staff in the lab.

Week of December 10, 2018

Good day!

Last Thursday the Dearborn STEM Academy was buzzing with activity; youth wrestling, middle school volleyball, the Brilliant Career lab hosting students and staff working on projects, students getting extra help from staff; this was happening after 3:00 pm dismissal. At the Dearborn STEM Academy we are committed to educating the whole child, educationally and from a social and emotional lens. Please feel welcome to visit us at anytime to see the great things happening here.

We are still looking for more students in grades 8-12 for our theater program:

  • Acting

  • Singing

  • Dancing

  • Writing, editing

  • Set design

  • Sound production

  • Backstage crew

The new group meets at the school on Wednesdays from 2-:30 and on Fridays from 3:30-5 pm. Come join us!

Our youth wrestling program started this past week; the program is open to boys and girls and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 pm. The program runs through March 10th.

We will be starting up a Middle School Basketball Program and an after school dance program soon.

Research is pretty clear and shows that students involved in school activities outside of the regular school day have better school attendance and improved academic performance.

Boston Public Schools-Beijing International Education Exchange Center partnership

On Monday, December 10th the Dearborn STEM Academy is hosting a group of educators from China. The Beijing International Education Exchange Center (BIEEC) has selected 14 teachers from Beijing to visit schools in Boston. They are interested in learning about education innovation in classroom teaching and learning and about student support. BIEEC would like to partner with BPS over the next several years to sponsor student and faculty exchanges.

WIN (What I Need) time; students work with their advisory teacher to select appropriate activities. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays students are either assigned to an enrichment activity or to a class where they need extra support or need to complete missed assignments. On Mondays and Fridays students are back in advisory time with their advisory teacher to do check-ins.

We are excited to have so many engaging and enriching classes, during the day during WIN time.

Please see the attached document for a list of the offerings.
