2015-16 Oakland Unified Big Question of the Year
2015-16 Big Question
How are we aligning strategies for all targeted groups to ensure closing achievement gaps?
Anderson's Guided Reading in Leveled Groups
Her other readers are reading independently at their level.
Wolfe's Math Intervention & Peer Teaching
The other students in the class were working in pairs to solve problems together.
At the end of the lesson, he pulled them back together to talk about how they worked together and what was helpful about this instructional structure in his class.
Equity is not Equal in Mr. Witte's Room
The rest of his students are reading independently at their level and he confers or does guiding reading with them less frequently.
Professional Development Weds., 2/16/16
Bring:
1) Your Lucy Calkins Reading Units- The Whole Box!
2) Your PLC Team Decision re: which unit you will be planning and working on during the next several weeks
3) Your chromebook
Mindfulness: Mr. Witte
End of Unit Math Assessments
If you need help getting these into Illuminate, please talk to Mr. Miller ASAP (do not wait until 3/11!). We will not have time at a PD to scan these, so plan to do this on your own now that all have been trained in how to complete.
Moving Bodies- Operations & Logistics
Uniforms
The Uniform Swap is starting so all students can have access to free uniforms at the exchange table.
In the upper grades there has been an increase in "fashion bullying", uniforms help us keep the focus on our learning.
Cell Phones
Recess Reminders- Please Read! Yard Staff need your help!
1) Follow the recess schedule (do not send your students out early or stay late and expect yard duty teachers to watch them).
2) For rainy day schedule, please follow the schedule. Even if you think it's no longer raining and you want to watch your own students on the yard during lunch, once we start rainy day schedule we must continue to follow it because the times are different.
We can't have half the school on rainy day schedule and have the school on non-rainy day because supervisors are stuck in classrooms and cannot watch students on the yard.
It becomes too confusing to the students and the supervisors.
Book Fair This Week!
Thanks to the teachers who came to the preview and chose books for their "wish lists". Parents often buy these books for your class to add to your collection!
LET YOUR STUDENTS KNOW TO BRING THEIR MONEY ON THEIR LIBRARY DAY!
The library will be open for sales during lunch and recess, but I'm checking with the parents running the fair to make sure that we have guidelines about who can shop at which times.
Book Fair Expectations for Students
1) Book Fair is open before school (students must come with a parent)
2) Students can come after school on their own or with a parent. Students in after school programs need to report to their after school programs and should not stop to shop.
3) TK-K students will come only during their classroom visit or with parents before/afterschool
4) 1-3 graders can shop at the pm recess
5) 4-5th grader can shop at the am recess
6) 10 students at a time will be allowed in to shop and volunteers will help to encourage students to shop and go (no hanging out in the fair).
7) Students will wait in the hallway in a line to prevent too many shoppers shopping at once
8) Students coming in at lunch should come in during their PLAY time, NOT their eating time.
9) Students will leave their backpacks in the hallway while they are in the faire.

Jobs:
- Pick up clothes in lower and upper yards and hang in the auditorium
- Put all "little stuff" (lunches, books, headbands, scarves, hats) in the box next to the rack in the auditorium
- Extra - zip/button up sweaters and jackets
- More Extra - arrange by size (great for those looking for a "small jacket")
Even More Extra - create a "Labeled" tag(s) that demarks a section on the rack. If your team finds labeled clothes, they can hang them in the labeled area of the rack.

Restorative Justice Circle Idea #2:
Topic/Focus: Individual demonstrates knowledge of personal strengths, challenges, cultural, linguistic assets, and aspirations.
Questions you can ask include:
1. What are your personal strengths?
2. If one of your personal strengths was a super power, what would it be?
3. If you had to describe one of your strengths as a body of water (stream, a waterfall, a river, a tidal wave, etc.), what would you be and why?
4. What is a dish/food you like to eat on a special occasion?
5. If you were a flavor of ice cream, what flavor would you be?
6. If you could serve one dish that would represent who you are, what would you serve?
Champions of Kindness- Board is looking a little sparse :(

Readathon Is Coming Up- Think of a Wacky Incentive to Motivate your Kids to Read Every day!
When teachers incentivize reading, the readathon is even more fun, we make more money and most importantly, students are more likely to read! Be creative!
California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Paper Surveys DUE On Friday 2/26
Please put all surveys in Ms. Cabral's or Ms. Morgan's box in the office.
