YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE FROM THE SOUTH GLENS FALLS CSD
Dear SGF Families
We wanted to let you in on a fantastic partnership we currently have going on in our district. Mr. Hansen’s South High child psychology class started their visitation at Harrison Avenue today. The high schoolers worked with third graders in Mrs. Whitney and Mrs. Davies’ classes. The students are so excited to get to partner up this trimester! See photos from the first session below.
We have several exciting updates for you this week.
Portrait of a Graduate
This week, ten staff members attended the EdLeader 21 Portrait of a Graduate annual conference. We wanted to take a few moments to introduce Portrait of a Graduate and our vision for it to the district community.
What is a Portrait of a Graduate?
It’s our school district’s vision for the 21st century, deeper learning for every student. Portrait of a Graduate adapts the traditional education model to evolve in an ever-changing world.
While every school system is unique, they all are connected by a shared aspiration: that all students have an educational experience preparing them to thrive in the future. This conference allowed our teachers and administrators to hear from schools across the country about their vision for deeper learning and meaningful experiences for their students. Deeper learning occurs through the purposeful integration of rigorous academic content with experiences that intentionally cultivate skills, mindsets, and literacies essential for students to become lifelong learners and contributors in the 21st century.
South Glens Falls CSD will work with the entire community to create a vision that guides the district as a “north star” to prepare students for life after school. When students graduate, that’s really just the beginning.
This shared vision will highlight the qualities our graduates need to possess in order to be positive contributors to society and have a good quality of life. Look for a survey to come out in the coming weeks to get the conversation started. We need everyone’s voice to make this specific to our students in South Glens Falls. Once we analyze this data, we will look for school and community volunteers to discuss our results and assist with the next steps moving forward.

Wear Green for Mental Health Awareness Oct. 7:
Transforming Trauma - The School as a Healing Community:
This week, 30 of our staff members from across the district - representing all six buildings - began a learning journey in partnership with the Northeast Family Institute, Vermont Higher Education Collaborative and Castleton University around the topic of trauma awareness and trauma-informed interventions in educational institutions. This is the second group of district employees embarking on this graduate-level coursework that will continue over five full-day sessions through January 2023.
Previously, we have had a group of 29 individuals, again representing all six buildings, participate in this level one course in the fall of 2021. Many of them will continue with a level two course in November.
We are so excited to be able to provide this opportunity for educational advancement to our staff members through federal grant funding at no cost to individuals or taxpayers.
Our plan is to continue this fundamental professional learning, aligned with our district themes of safety and mental health, through the 2023-24 school year.

Alternate Transportation For Athletics
As many of you are aware, school districts across the state continue to face bus driver shortages. The South Glens Falls CSD is no exception.
Our Transportation Department is currently operating with just enough bus drivers and monitors to complete the district’s daily routes.
To ensure our students can participate in as many athletic competitions as possible, South Glens Falls CSD is setting up a tiered approach to athletic transportation if we cannot secure a bus driver for an athletic competition.
In the event there is NOT a driver available, we will ask parents/guardians to transport students for short distances - Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, Queensbury and Schuylerville.
Our athletic department works hard to ensure that schedules allow transportation for all our athletes. We are, however, taking this step to head off any potential issues. We want to assure our families that they will not have to transport their students for every away game.
We fully understand that this is a hardship for many families. At SGF, we always try our best to accommodate all families. We aim to keep contests going at all levels. This is one way we are trying to make that happen. Unfortunately, our district is not immune from the issue of driver shortages.
The athletics department will send out a ParentSquare notification with permission slips for parents/guardians who can drive their child(ren) if/when it is needed.
Families who are unable to drive may have a parent/guardian from the team that is willing to drive the child to and from the game. We ask that a separate form be filled out approving the alternative transportation.
In the event there is a longer run for a game, and no district drivers are available, the SGF athletic office will secure a coach bus for our athletes. In addition, the district may change the time of some games to allow multiple teams to take teams on the same charter bus.
We thank you for your cooperation and understanding on this matter. Any further questions may be directed to the athletic office at (518) 792-9987.
