Exploring Assistive Technology
Apple Devices
ZOOM!
Zoom is an Apple accessibility tool that comes standard on every touchscreen Apple iOS device. The built-in magnifier will enhance any screen from mail to home screens. All apps downloaded from the App Store allow the zoom function to be used. It can be turned on and off as desired through the settings, in case not all users have the desire for the function. Users can turn Zoom on for the full screen or a picture in picture mode, this allows the viewer to see the zoomed area in a separate window while the rest of the screen remains original size. The magnifier can be adjusted between 100 and 1,500 percent with multiple feature options available. Zoom allows you to use all the standard gestures to navigate the device. Some may find it helpful to use zoom with voiceover to see and hear what's happening on the screen better.
Zoom in the Classroom
- Students in Kindergarten can use this simple zoom feature without conflict. A simple three finger touch makes the screen adjust.
- Students with visual impairments are able to see information close up.
- Teachers will be able to upload documents that can be zoomed in on rather than resizing them on xerox machines.
- Students are able to use zoom for standardized testing and this will give them practice.
- All students can use this to zoom in on text for close reading.
- Everyone can benefit from zoom, when text or images are too small they can be made bigger with a simple touch.
