Course Policies
Attendance
Attendance is required for all class sessions.
Absences
Refer to the Veterinary Technology Program Statement of Policy for clarification of excused versus unexcused absences.
For EXCUSED absences from lecture sessions, examinations or quizzes, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the course instructor for make-up work. Make-up work and examinations will be offered whenever feasible. Make-up examinations may NOT duplicate those given at regularly scheduled times.
For UNEXCUSED absences, no make-up class sessions, quizzes or examinations will be offered. Consequently, a grade of 0.0 will result for that examination, quiz, or class session. One percent will be deducted from the overall course score for each unexcused absence.
Late Assignments
Late assignments will be accepted for full credit in the case of an EXCUSED absence. The deadline date for the assignment will be extended one working day for each day of excused absence. Further extensions will be left up to the discretion of the course instructor and must be arranged by the student upon his/her return to class.
If no absence is involved or if the absence is UNEXCUSED, late assignments will not be accepted. Failure to submit an assignment on time will result in no credit for the assignment.
Extra Credit
Extra credit assignments, projects and test questions WILL NOT be offered, due to the full-time nature of the Program and the amount of material to be covered in the course.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Michigan State University is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services and activities. Requests for accommodations by persons with disabilities may be made by contacting the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities at 517-884-RCPD or on the web at rcpd.msu.edu. Once your eligibility for an accommodation has been determined, you will be issued a Verified Individual Services Accommodation ("VISA") form. Please present this form to me at the start of the term. Requests received after this date may not be honored.
Student Evaluation
Class Participation
Communication is an important skill that is emphasized throughout the Veterinary Technology Program curriculum. To guide students in the development of verbal communication skills, students will be called on during class sessions to discuss important concepts and principles pertinent to the course objectives. Collaborative learning methods will be employed in this course, requiring active participation by the students. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in classroom activities, to enhance the overall learning experience. Class participation points are awarded based on written class assignments and your contribution to class discussion and activities. You are responsible for doing the prep-work in advance of class, and taking an active role in class activities and discussion. Engaging in distracting activities (e.g., Reading materials not related to this course, scrolling through Facebook/Twitter or working on the Daily crossword puzzle) will result in points deducted from your participation grade. Unexcused tardiness and absence from class sessions will result in grade reductions. Reductions for unexcused absences will be minus 1% for each hour of scheduled class-time, deducted from the total, accumulated course score.
Assignments
Students should anticipate weekly reading assignments in the required text and other related materials as well as computerized assignments via D2L. Videos and other required content will be posted to D2L. To view them, you will need to use a high-speed internet connection. Follow the directions in d2l.msu.edu to ensure that you have current media player capabilities. Assignments and quizzes (in class or online) may contain information from the assigned readings and surgical videos, prior to coverage of the information in class.
Quizzes and Examinations
Announced or unannounced quizzes may occur in any class session. Format of the quizzes and examinations may vary, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, essay or performance-based questions. They may be administered verbally, in a written format or computerized (i.e. outside class, via D2L). Partial credit may be awarded for fill-in-the-blank, short answer, essay, verbal and performance-based responses, based on thoroughness, accuracy, clarity, and spelling of the student’s actual response, not what is implied. Make up quizzes and examinations will only be offered in cases of excused absences. All quizzes will be time-sensitive. No additional time will be offered for in-class quizzes or examinations in cases of tardiness. Coming to class on time and prepared will be essential for student performance. Content of quizzes may include past information, as well as current information from reading and homework assignments. While most quizzes will focus on more current information, it should be expected that any quiz and certainly examinations will be cumulative with regard to information.
A commitment to lifelong learning is required for success in the veterinary technology profession.

In addition, the Veterinary Technology program adheres to the policies on academic honesty as specified in General Student Regulations 1.0, Protection of Scholarship and Grades; the all-University Policy on Integrity of Scholarship and Grades; and Ordinance 17.00, Examinations. Therefore, unless authorized by your instructor, you are expected to complete all course assignments, including homework, lab work, quizzes, tests and exams, without assistance from any source including other classmates.. Contact your instructor if you are unsure about the appropriateness of your course work. (See also the Academic Integrity webpage.)
Violation Procedures
All students will adhere to Program and University standards for academic integrity. Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Suspicion of academic dishonesty will be addressed swiftly by the Course Instructor and the co-directors of the Veterinary Technology Program. Penalties for academic dishonesty may result in a 0.0 for the grade item in question, a 1.5 or 0.0 for the course, and/or dismissal from the Program. If an instructor believes the academic honesty policy has been violated, they will first report the violation to the Veterinary Technology program co-directors and then contact the student to investigate the nature and scope of the violation.
