Update for Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Programs
Safe Access to Flexible Education (SAFE) Grants
On Monday, Gov. Henry McMaster announced an exciting and important school funding opportunity. Safe Access to Flexible Education (SAFE) Grants is a program to address the educational needs of eligible K5-12 students who attend participating independent schools in South Carolina.
Families with a household adjusted gross income of 300% or less of the federal poverty level may apply to receive a SAFE Grant of up to $6,500 per student. This program is permitted up to 5,000 students statewide for a total of $32 million in aid.
Nearly 68% of all South Carolina households qualify. This means that families who could not have afforded private schools now have the ability to make the best choice for their children's education -- and we want families to join us in our top-rated, faith-filled Catholic schools. Additionally, many of our current families qualify for this program.
Parents may sign up to receive important program notifications, such as the opening of the online portal at MySCeducation.org. If you have any questions, please contact Michael F. Acquilano, Director of the SC Catholic Conference, at macquilano@charlestondiocese.org or 843-709-2717.
SAFE Grants - What does this mean for SFCS and you?
If you are already receiving tuition assistance and/or a tuition discount, we need you to apply for this grant. The grant money will replace all or part of your current tuition assistance award. If you currently receive less than $6,500 in assistance, and qualify, your tuition due will decrease. If you did not apply for aid, but qualify, you can get the full grant of $6,500 and your tuition due will decrease. This is great news for our families, as many of you are going to pay less to attend SFCS next year. It is great news for SFCS and all our Catholic schools, as it will greatly improve our overall financial health. We also anticipate enrollment growth as word of this grant program gets out.
This is a first come, first served grant opportunity. Applications open at 10:00 am on August 3. The $32,000,000 allocated for this grant program will disappear fast. We need everyone who qualifies to apply. For more information please visit https://mysceducation.org/school-subtype/safe-grants/
Statement from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston regarding the SAFE Grants temporary restraining order
“This temporary injunction hurts low- and middle-income parents who want to continue sending their children to the school of their choice. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in the educational environment that best suits his or her needs, whether it is a public, private, or religious school. Gov. McMaster recognized that by announcing the SAFE Grants program.
“We stand with parents and their children and their right to the quality education that best suits their needs in the midst of a pandemic. We, again, thank Gov. McMaster and will pray for appropriate resolution in this important matter.”
