Not So Secret Secrets

Not So Secret Secrets

The hack at the online dating site Ashley Madison has been in the news for several weeks now. If you haven’t heard, this particular website facilitates connections between married men and women who are looking to have an affair. The contacts of this supposedly confidential website are now public knowledge due to a computer hacker. Millions of clients are now exposed.

Like we didn’t see this coming.

Infidelity is a tale as old as time. One of the oldest written commandments, “You shall not commit adultery”(Ex.20:14), is contained in our Old Testament laws. Wisdom literature in Proverbs speaks of “drinking from your own cistern”(5:5) as a metaphor for fidelity. Jesus speaks very clearly about adultery being sinful in his sermon on the mount (Matt. 5:27-28). While adultery is not a criminal offense in most western countries, it is still grounds for divorce and property settlements. Betrayal of this sort hurts so many people in the family.

There are many origins of marriage infidelity. I believe that we don’t just wake up one day and decide to commit adultery. It’s usually a symptom of a troubled relationship long before the marriage covenant gets broken. Major changes in the family like a death or a child going to college or some other stressor begin the problems. Often there’s been a history of communication problems and lack of conflict resolution. Marriage relationship satisfaction declines. Put this together with easy availability of internet pornography and social networking and a relationship spirals out of the covenant.

There is help.

Like with bodily health, prevention is the best medicine. Crossroads UMC’s Marriage Enrichment Group starts back on September 13th at 5:00pm. This group is like low-impact exercise for your relationship. It’s a monthly gathering that helps you and your spouse check-in on your relationship. The exercises are not group therapy or counseling. It’s an evening of one-on-one activities that enrich your relationship. No matter what age and stage of marriage you are in there is something here to make your relationship more adultery-proof. I hope you’ll consider join us for the valuable monthly gathering!

Past Month's Events

From Tyler Head

Dear Crossroads Family,

I would like to thank everyone for the extremely generous contribution for my stem cell procedure fund. It's difficult to even put into words how important that much money is to us. In addition to the money donated I would also like to thank everyone for their own personal donations and volunteer work. But most importantly than either of those I thank you all for your prayers. The power of God's will is being felt everyday, and there's no price tag on spiritual support. A church should feel like a home and the members should feel like family, and that's exactly how Crossroads United Methodist is. Thank you all once again and God bless.

Sincerely,

Tyler Head
