Mayfield Messenger
Week 24 Edition/January 27, 2023
Message from Dr. Frischkorn
Good Evening Mayfield Intermediate School students and families!
Wednesday, January 25th, marked the 100th Day of School. The 100th day of school tends to be a celebratory mark in the school year. It signifies that we are approaching the final months of the school year and we begin assessing how our students are performing in their class. WIDA testing starts in February for all our English Language Learners.
Next week marks the Interim reporting time for the 3rd quarter. We are already 4.5 weeks through the quarter. Parents must continue to monitor their child's grades and attendance. Good grades and good attendance go hand-in-hand. We celebrated 228 students in 5th and 6th grade the past two weeks for achieving all A's or all A's and B's. One thing that many of the students had in common was that they all had excellent attendance and missed less than five days of school during the first 100 days of the school year. We had several students that continued to have perfect attendance. We want to continue to support all our students had helped them come to school every day to experience academic success.
Always Learning,
Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Information About Math 6 Advanced Screening Process
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Manassas City Public Schools strive to provide the most appropriate challenge in educational programming for all students. To that effort, our school system continually assesses students to match programming with needs. This February, all 5th grade students will take a math 6 advanced screening exam. The purpose of this exam is to gauge students' readiness for advancement in mathematics.
The screening exam is just one data point used to determine students' readiness. MCPS uses a holistic model including grades, teacher collected data, and anecdotal evidence to determine appropriate placement of students. Decisions will be made and communicated to parents by the end of this school year.
If you do NOT want your child participating in the screening exam, please contact your child’s math teacher no later than Friday, February 3rd. You do not need to contact anyone for your child to participate as it is automatically given to all 5th graders unless parents request otherwise by the date stated in the previous sentence. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher directly.
Sincerely,
Math Selection Team
Gifted and Talented Referrals for the Spring Semester
The deadline to refer a student to be evaluated for GT this spring is Friday, February 3. Here is the link
:

We do not take referrals for sixth-graders in the spring semester, since there is no GT pullout class at Metz. However, any sixth-grader that you feel belongs in GT should definitely apply to be in IH and/or IMS next year. These are the advanced programs at Metz, made up of a combination of GT-identified and non-identified students. More information about how to apply will be distributed over the next couple of weeks.
