About the Workshop:
Six Traits Writing is a powerful tool for teachers to use to teach, assess, and guide student writing. Traits can be utilized across genres, grade levels, and content areas. It accelerates a student’s ability to develop 21st Century Skills such as the 4 C's (communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking). In this highly interactive workshop, participants will learn about each trait, how to teach and assess each trait, and, more importantly, how to guide students to improve their written work.
Outcomes:
In this introductory presentation, Participants will:
- Utilize the seven strategies to teach writing;
- Identify and teach the components of strong writing;
- Assess student writing using an analytical model as well as holistic;
- Conference with students about their writing using Traits as the focus for conversation.
Day One Schedule:

10:00-12:00: Trait of Ideas (use of literature, assessment of student writing, lesson ideas, conference suggestions)
12:00-12:45: Lunch
12:45-1:00: Wrap up on Ideas
1:00-2:00: Trait of organization (use of literature, lesson ideas, assessment of writing, ways to organize)
2:00-2:10: Break
2:10-3:00: Trait of organization continued
Day Two Schedule:
8:30-9:45: Trait of Voice (connecting voice to purpose and audience; how to teach voice)
9:45-10:00: Break
10:00-12:00: Trait of Word Choice (use of literature, assessing student writing, lesson ideas, purpose and audience)
12:00-12:45: Lunch
12:45-1:45: Trait of Sentence Fluency (literature, assessing writing, lesson ideas, revision)
1:45-2:45: Trait of Conventions (quiz, teaching conventions)
2:45-3:00: Final questions and wrap up
About the Presenter
Fred Wolff worked in public schools for 24 years, 19 as a classroom teacher. For the past ten years he has worked with teachers across the U.S. and in numerous international schools helping to improve student writing. Fred has received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, a Fulbright to study education in Japan, and most recently wrote and co-produced an hour- long, PBS aired documentary about Holocaust survivors in his home state of New Hampshire. His first book, The Write Direction, was published by Pearson. He received his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston University.
