ACS schools jump right into action with hands-on activities and labs
AES students bridge together thoughts in collaboration project
5th graders in Mrs. Brigance's classroom at Arlington Elementary collaborated intentionally to design and build a bridge that could withstand the weight of a sack of pennies. The project required the students to communicate their thoughts and ideas and learn from failures, while also incorporating science and math standards.
Arlington High students make chemistry in a bag in 1st lab experience of the year
AHS Chemistry Honors students in Mr. Ward's class watched chemistry happen right before their eyes in a hands-on lab during the first week back. The lab showcased a chemical reaction that allowed students to observe changes in temperature, color and state of matter. It was just the first of many times these students will work from the lab this semester.

AHS Machining program spotlighted in statewide Career & Tech Education release
Arlington High School was spotlighted in a statewide release for the school's first-of-a-kind machining camp! This past summer, some of our students were trained by industry professionals in a week-long boot camp that gave them hands-on experience with CNC machines - the kind you find in medical device manufacturer facilities like MicroPort and Stryker.
The camp, hosted in Arlington High's state-of-the-art machining lab, also gave the students the opportunity to earn a $500 stipend at the end of the week.
"A lot of industries are hesitant to have 17 or 18-year-olds in their businesses because they view it as a risk," said Kim Douglas, Secondary Education Supervisor for Arlington Community Schools. "With this camp, we were able to remove the liability by hosting it in our own facility while still having industry experts lead our students. I would definitely do this again for students, especially for the exposure it provides them."
