Dear Parents and Staff
Our Year Six children completed the last step in their journey towards their Confirmation when they participated in an excellent Retreat day facilitated by Faith Retreats last Monday. We look forward to celebrating this very special time with them and their families on Saturday evening when they receive the Sacrament from Fr Quynh. Please remember to keep them and their teachers in your prayers.
MERCY DAY
We have a great day planned for the children tomorrow as we celebrate our school’s charism by recognising our Mercy tradition. The foundress of the Mercy Sisters Catherine McAuley, was born in Dublin, Ireland on 29 September 1778. She established the Sisters of Mercy in December 1831. The first Mercy Sisters to come to Perth arrived in 1846 and were led by Sr Ursula Frayne in whose honour a plaque has been laid in the footpath in Perth city near the corner of St George’s Terrace and Barrack Street. The Mercy Sisters commenced working at Holy Name School in Carlisle in 1938 and in 2010 Holy Name School amalgamated with Notre Dame with a new school on the current Cloverdale site being officially opened in 2011. Our Mercy Day celebrations are in honour of our Religious founders and the many Sisters who have worked in our school over many years.
~Resolve to do good today and better tomorrow~

- The children will participate in all games and activities for no charge.
· It is a Free Dress day for all children and staff.
NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES
Congratulations to all of our Year Five children who presented so beautifully at their Night of the Notables afternoon/evening yesterday. They all spoke with confidence and had thoroughly researched their notable person. For me the most notable persons were the children who excelled in an environment that so many people find very daunting. I now look forward to the Year Four presentations at their Awesome Aussies presentations on Wednesday of the last week of this Term.
EDUDANCE
I’m really looking forward to the culmination of the children’s efforts in Edudance with their concert performances in the last week of Term. I have heard that some staff may even be joining their class for the performance!
· Monday 17 September (2.15pm) ‘M’ Classes
· Tuesday 18 September (2.15pm) ‘P’ Classes
I hope to see many parents there to support the children’s wonderful efforts.
CARNEVALE
Each year Catholic Education WA celebrates the many talents within our schools with a Carnevale in the Perth Cultural Centre. This year our School Choir has been invited to entertain the people of Perth at this event in the session between 11.15am – 12.30pm. If you’re in the city I’m sure they would appreciate your support.
HIGH SCHOOL
I often receive requests from parents regarding which High School they should consider for their child’s Secondary Education. Whilst I am happy to give an opinion based upon what I know about the various schools, an effective method of determining which school is to attend Open Days. Mercedes Collegewill be holding their Open Day next Tuesday 11 September with guided tours at 8.30am and 11.00am. Please collect a flyer from our school office if you are interested.

YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS
What a busy term we have had in Year One. There has been Pyjama day, Book Week, we welcomed our grandparents into our classroom to look at our wonderful work and we have been practicing really hard to master our EDU-Dance routine.
In between the many events over this term we have been learning about Fairy Tales. We have been looking closely at the characters in the Fairy Tales and how we can describe them and we have looked at the many places that a fairy tale can be set. We have also learnt that a Fairy Tale has a problem and a solution. Currently we are completing a news presentation to our class mates on our favourite Fairy Tale. We are even beginning to create our very own Fairy Tale stories.
A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to have a visit to Brownes Dairy. We had the opportunity to look at a real cow, watch the milk be packaged by the robot and taste some yummy flavoured yoghurt. We learnt something interesting; it is not good for you to drink raw milk. We came back to school with a Brownes flavoured milk that we could enjoy.
This term we have been doing Makerspace once a week. We have been using our super creative brains to build some amazing construction pieces from cardboard, build lego characters, explore with tegu blocks and have had the opportunity to code with the robots. We love Makerspace and will be sad when its all over this term.
This week is another busy week in Year One. On Monday we had an RAC incursion where we learnt how to cross the road safely; “stop, look, listen and think”. Tuesday we participated in the Y-safe Incursion and Wednesday we experienced an opera incursion.
WOW! We really can’t believe how quickly this term has flown by. As you can tell we are just having so much fun learning and experiencing new things.

GREAT VEGGIE CRUNCH - TUESDAY 3 September
Students from all over Australia participated in the ‘Great Veggie Crunch’ this week. Notre Dame was one of the many schools involved on Tuesday, trying to make the loudest possible crunch sound we could with our fantastic veggies. I would like to thank Caroline Messenger from ‘Belmont Community Vibes’ for donating some fantastic fresh veg for the kids and staff to eat on the day. it’s a great way to come together as a school and remind ourselves of the importance of the crunch ’n’ sip program and a healthy lifestyle. It’s fair to say we definitely were crunching like crocodiles by testing out the new crunch ‘o’ meter app online (picture below). Prizes were also handed out to students showcasing healthy attitudes and behaviours and answering healthy lifestyle questions. I would also like to thank the fantastic crunch helpers and the year 4 group who helped with handing out plates of veggies to classes, setting up for the event and handing out prizes.
SPORTS NEWS
Junior Aths Carnival - Thursday, 13 September
Thank you to all the fantastic parents who have offered to help at the carnival. The amount of assistance offered is amazing and parents have been notified by email regarding their jobs for the day. I know all of the students are looking forward to the day. A reminder that a coffee van has been organised and that all track and team game events will be held on the school oval. Year 1 and 2 vortex rotation events (11.15am - 12.15pm) will be held at Miles Park.
Senior Field Events & 400m
Thank you the those who have offered to assist with their child’s year group field events. Parents have been notified by email with information regarding the events. A reminder that years 4-6 only will be participating in the 400m events next Friday. Year 3 students will participate in the 200m and 100m running events at the track/team games carnival in term 4. Students will be able to practise for their events on the day they are participating (e.g. Year 5 on Monday) from 8am - 8.30am next week, with the assistance of myself and faction captains. The Year 4 shot put events will remain at this stage but may be changed to vortex events pending on PE lessons this week. An SMS will be sent to Year 4 parents if this event is changed for next week.

CANTEEN NEWS
Thank you for volunteering in our canteen. Volunteers enable the canteen to provide a healthy and affordable food service to students, staff & other volunteers.
Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents, students and staff at Notre Dame.
Be warned you may walk away with a lighter wallet as your children talk you into buying canteen treats. Don’t worry about grabbing a takeaway coffee on the way to school, the canteen has our very own coffee machine and I have been told for a tea drinker I make pretty good coffee! You can have a short or long black; a flat white; a cappuccino or if you prefer we have instant. Tea drinkers can either have black or peppermint tea. If you have milk allergies we can cater to these if given notice.
A complimentary lunch is offered to our volunteers as a way of saying thank you.
We appreciate your help and hope you enjoy volunteering with us.
If you are able to volunteer in the canteen even for half an hour please fill out the form below, contact me on Monday, Wednesday or Friday or just pop in we never turn away walk-ins.
