Information from the GHS Counseling Department-Sept. 2019

Welcome to the 2019-20 School Year

The 2019-20 school year is underway and the GHS counseling staff is excited to be working with our GHS families and students. Our goal is to provide developmentally appropriate information to all students in order to assist them in making informed decisions. Individual work with students, small group sessions, and classroom lessons/presentations are part of our proactive approach to impact Grafton High School students in a positive and enriching way. FAFSA/Financial Aid Information Night for Seniors & Families

The GHS Counseling Department is hosting a financial aid information meeting on September 16, 6 pm, in the GHS Auditorium. A financial aid representative from an area college will be explaining the process of applying for federal financial aid. Come learn the details of this important process with the opportunity to ask questions afterward. Both students and parents are encouraged to attend!

Colleges Visiting GHS

Many colleges will be visiting GHS and/or hosting regional informational meetings for interested students. Students are asked to sign up in the College Admission Visits binder ahead of time located in the Counseling Office. Updated college visit information can be found in Naviance Student.

Senior College Applications

The college application season is well underway for many seniors at GHS! The school counselors presented a "Senior College Application Meeting" in August where information about the process and procedures of applying were discussed. Here is the link to the information which was shared at the College Application Meeting . Students are encouraged to sign up to see their school counselor during BHT or study hall if they have any questions.

Naviance Student

The Grafton School District continues to use Naviance Student which is a college and career planning tool. Students will be using Naviance Student throughout their time at GHS. Naviance Student can be found on the GHS website under Quick Links. Please see your school counselor with any questions.

Milwaukee National College Fair

The Milwaukee National College Fair sponsored by the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) will be held at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee on October 6, 12-3 pm. This is an opportunity for students to connect with hundreds of colleges and universities in one location. More information can be found on the NACAC website. Students are encouraged to pre-register for the event.

Wisconsin Education Fair

The WI Education Fair will be held on October 15th, 6-8 pm, at Arrowhead High School. Visit WEF for more information.


The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be offered to juniors and selecte sophomores on Wednesday, October 16th, 7:30-11:20. The PSAT allows juniors the opportunity to qualify for scholarships including the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT also gives students an opportunity to experience additional standardized testing.

There is a $17 testing fee which is due to the GHS Counseling Office by September 17. Please contact Mrs. Isbell if you have any questions.


College Admissions Exams

Is your student planning on taking or re-taking the ACT/SAT for college admissions and/or scholarship consideration? The ACT national test dates can be found here and the SAT test dates are here. national test dates for each test:

Academic and Career Planning (ACP)

Throughout the year students in grades 9-11 will be receiving counselor developed Academic and Career Planning (ACP) lessons in their homerooms. Students will be utilizing Naviance Student to learn more about who they are and explore post-secondary opportunities.

Seniors will be meeting with counselors in September-October to discuss college/career plans for next year.

Juniors will meet with counselors for Individual ACP Junior Conferences during second quarter. Parents are invited to attend the ACP meetings.

Freshmen will meet with counselors for Individual ACP Conferences during the spring. Parents are invited to attend the ACP meetings.

Students and parents are always welcome to meet with the school counselors beyond the scheduled meetings listed above. Please contact Mrs. Rieck to schedule an appointment.


REDgen stands for resiliency(R), education(E), and determined(D) to make a difference in the health of a new generation (gen). This organization was founded by parents, educators and community leaders who are "dedicated to advocating for the mental health and well being of all youth."
