A Message from our Principal...
Dear Jefferson Families;
Wow! It is day 13 of the new school year already. It has been quite an eventful two weeks of school. One thing stands out more than anything else is the obvious joy that our students and staff exhibit in being back to school! There is genuine excitement to be learning and reestablishing relationships with peers and staff. We love being together again.
We have a lot of exciting things planned for the year. One thing that I’d like to highlight is our emphasis on becoming really strong readers. Last week I had the privilege of going to every homeroom and reading a book called The Word Collector by Peter Reynolds. This book beautifully expresses the message that words are powerful and that they can help us express our thoughts, feelings and dreams. Our students were inspired to collect words of their own and I gave them each a small notebook to use in collecting these words. Please ask your child about the words they are collecting. This is a year-long project and literally everyone in the building will be celebrating words. We will have many activities that use our collected words which will culminate in published writings and performances by our student authors. We are very excited about this project. Look for more details as the year unfolds.
Everyone at Jefferson truly believes in our partnership with families. We learn and grow with our students and you. Please call us with any questions, comments or suggestions.
Most sincerely,
Dr. Judy Floeter

Important Reminder!
4th Grade Welcome!
4th Grade has started the year strong! All students are reading Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. We are focusing on many different reading and writing skills and strategies. In math, we began the year with many math activities to promote a growth mindset.
Please remember to have your child bring a water bottle and extra mask everyday.
5th Grade Welcome Back!
Greetings 5th grade parents and guardians! We are off to a great start this year in 5th grade!
This quarter we will be “Collecting Words” (Dr. Floeter is reading The Word Collector to each of the classes). Students will be collecting their favorite words in a small spiral notebook, and we will all share our favorite words. During our novel study, we will be targeting Point of View as one of our essential standards. In addition, we are promoting a growth mindset in Math, which will incorporate Number Talks, Math Norms, and reading in Math. Our first focus will be on Place Value, including recognizing Decimal Placement. In Social Studies we will be looking into Geography, and using our mapping skills. In Science we will be focusing on matter.
Some things to remember this quarter are to send your student to school with reusable water bottles and extra masks! Also, the students are responsible to charge their Chromebooks EVERY night.
We are all so excited to have the students back at school!!

Meet Leo and Daisy, the Jefferson School bunnies!
As you may or may not know, Jefferson School has two friendly bunnies living in our enclosed courtyard (they bunk in a beautiful hutch provided by the Harvard Community Education Foundation). Leo (black) and Daisy (white) sometimes visit classrooms or students who have "bought" bunny time with Bee Bucks. If your child has pet allergies, PLEASE inform the classroom teacher. We all want to enjoy our bunnies' fun antics, but not with watery eyes and red bumps!
