President's Message:

Book Fair starts today! Please consider signing up for a shift to help us out:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094AA8A6238-book1

Wait until you see our students' faces light up with joy when they see all the new books on display. Enjoy this fun event as our students get excited about reading!

Book Fair:

A big shout out of thanks to the following volunteers who helped set up the Book Fair in record time on Friday: Jennifer Jury, April Marlier, Karen Robins, Caroline Bird, Dawn Matta, Lindsay Harston, Angela Haddon, Angela Murphy, Missy Balleydier, Denise Salisbury. A note of appreciation to Allison Arp and Angela Murphy, who provided special treats for the teacher preview party on Friday afternoon. A special thanks to Deanna Zolfo and Annie Streger for help designing and making the incredible hallway mural outside the media center.

This week, Tracks 1&2 will be previewing and purchasing books from the Scholastic Book Fair set up in the Media Center. Next week, the Book Fair will repeat for Tracks 3&4. Your child will bring home a "wish list" of books they have selected from the fair. If you wish to purchase these books, you may do so by attending one of our Family Nights or you may send in checks (made out to MCE PTA) or cash (change will be provided from any cash sales).

We will be running a Penny War competition between grade levels, so please allow your child to bring in any loose change from around the house. Pennies count as a point toward that grade level's total and silver coins count as a negative values toward the grade level's total. The money from the Penny Wars will go toward purchasing a book for the kids-in-need here at Middle Creek Elementary and, if there are leftover funds, toward purchasing books on the Battle of the Books lists for our Media Center.

Family Night will occur on Wednesday, November 6 and Thursday, November 14 from 5:30-8:00pm. Both nights will be identical events. You may purchase books in the Media Center and send your child(ren) on an Adventure through Egypt in the gym. They will decode hieroglyphics and visit various Egyptian cities, ending at the Oasis with a snack provided by our Healthy Kids Committee. We still need a lot of help at the Family Night - if you can volunteer for a shift, please sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094AA8A6238-book1

Thanks so much for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair!

Spelling Bee:

The class spelling bees are complete! Congratulations to this year's winners and runners-up. (See names below) You have accomplished the first step toward the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The winners are invited to compete on Saturday, December 7 in the 3rd Annual School Spelling Bee. Check-in time is 12:00-12:15 p.m. and the bee begins at 1:00. Your families, friends and the public are invited to watch.

PARENTS OF CLASS WINNERS/RUNNERS-UP: We will send home school spelling bee info with your child this week or next week(T3). Parents, please return the Participation Form ASAP. Your child may continue studying from the same word list. The school bee will start easy using the 1st grade words but get increasingly difficult. When those words are exhausted, there will be additional words given which the spellers have not seen. One speller will be crowned champion and advance to the regional bee.

Final instructions will be emailed to winners a few days before the bee. All winners and runners-up will be listed in the program, however, only one speller can represent the class as a contestant in the bee. This year there will be 32 spellers participating.

The school champion will win a special trophy, prizes and the chance to compete against 75+ spellers in the PAGE of Wake County Spelling Bee on March 15, 2014.

Thanks to all the Middle Creek students who participated in their class bees. We have some talented spellers at our school! And thank you to the parents who helped with studying. You are all winners!

If you have not already sent a note to your child's teacher to allow your child to stay after school, please do so. Parents, please plan to pick your child up in the 2nd grade hallway at 4pm and sign them out before leaving. Students that are signed up to participate in chorus that attend the YMCA after school, will be brought to the multipurpose room to rejoin their regular YMCA program following rehearsal.

We look forward to seeing your students on Wednesday! Please email any questions to mceswinterchorus@gmail.com.

Reflections Art Contest:

A big THANK YOU to all the parents and teachers who encouraged, supported and cheered on our MCES students to participate in this year's Reflections Art Program. We have collected over 100 entries of Visual Art, Photography and Literature original works. We had a wonderful turnout this year for submissions in the Special Needs category! Hooray! Over the next 3 weeks, all of the entries will be judged by outside judges, scores will be totaled, and the 24 finalists will be announced by the end of November. Those 24 finalists will have their artwork delivered to the Wake County Reflections team, who will do their judging in December. Hopefully we will have some results back before our December break, to see if any MCES students will be moving on to the NC State level of competition. Just as a reminder, a Reflections Art Show will be on display from mid-January to mid-February, and the Family & Friends Awards Ceremony will be Fri, Feb. 7th in the evening. More details will come soon...Questions? Contact PTA member, Becky Lewis at beckylewis00@yahoo.com.
