Well first... Whats a rift?

A rift is a large crack in the earths surface that was formed by shifting tectonic plates.
The Great Rift Valley is located in the eastern part of Africa. Starting at Syria in Southwest Asia all the way to Mozambique in the Southeastern part of Africa. Lots of natural causes are the reason The Great Rift Valley got it's form including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The Great Rift Valley splits forming to branches creating a "y" shaped figure. Surrounding the rift is volcanic mountains rising and lakes that are parallel to it's length.
