The Titan Way - Respectful Language, Attitude and Actions
I hope you enjoyed your President's Day Weekend. In many ways, the timing was perfect. With so many things happening at our school, it was good for us to take some time to reflect. As you know this week we will celebrate the life of Robert Blas. It goes without saying that Mr. Blas is Mr. Eastlake. His impact has been profound from advocating for Title IX issues to supporting all types of students, he has made a lasting impact on our school culture and sense of community. While we cannot replace Robert, we can certainly continue his work of making an impact on the lives of young people. I have commissioned a special lettermen jacket bearing his name that will be placed at "Robert's Chair" in the press box. He will alway be with us. If you are attending one of the memorial services, the family has asked that you wear Titan Gear!
As we shift to school related events, I want to remind us of our ultimate goal in the next few years and that's a focus on the head and heart space of the school. I want us to focus on being committed to a strong WASC report that reflects all of the great things we do for our community. I know we will shine and we have a great chance to align our practices with our belief systems. Please be open and involved in the process. Your input always matters.
Many of our athletes are competing in the CIF playoffs these next few weeks. Make sure you cheer them on and offer your support. Go Titans!!
Let's get to some main points for the week.
A. Faculty Meeting. Our faculty meeting has been moved to next week. We will have more details. With so many people attending services for Mr. Blas, it only made sense that we postpone. REMEMBER: We are focused on reviewing PLC norms and practices. By this time, the common syllabus should be completed and we are shifting attention to the planning/assessment components of PLCs. Our last meetings before we shift to WASC will be on data analysis. It is crucial we understand that this time is for us to evaluate our PLC practices as we prepare for WASC.
B. Common Syllabus and PLC Planning. Mrs. Candelario has provided an email with specific directions to submit your rough drafts. Let us know if you have any concerns. Remember: This is a work in progress. Don't forget to check in with Karina about pullout days if you need more planning time.
C. Phil's BBQ and the Social Luncheon.I hope you will join us for some good old BBQ this Friday at lunch in the library. Orders are due by this Wednesday at the end of the day. Tri-tip, Chicken, Pulled Pork or Veggie Burger plus some mac salad and beans and a drink. Only $15. Even if you don't order Phil's, join us in the library and be with your colleagues. This is your time to just be a family. It's rare we get out of our rooms. Fill out this LINK. Please pay Karina by Thursday at the end of the day.
D. WASC Update. We shift our attention to WASC this March. A huge component of our WASC will be around our evaluation of school goals and progress. Please be involved in the dialogue as we implement our strategies.
E. Teacher of the Year. Congratulations Joel Foust! Please make sure you give him some much-deserved recognition. He is one of the most humble teachers you will ever meet.
F. Next SSA Training. Our trainer had to postpone the training to March. We are still looking for about 20 fabulous freshmen and 20 super sophomore to participate in the next Safe School Ambassador training on February 18-19. We need a well-rounded group of students. Please feel free to give us your suggestions (email Mark Brickley). Please submit those names as soon as possible. We are also looking for about 4-5 staff members interested in the two day training. If you are interested, please let Mr. Brickely know as well.
G. PD Opportunities. There are still opportunities to attend PDs. Let me and Karina know if you are interested in these great opportunities.
Building the Restorative Classroom
Participants will learn practical strategies for building a restorative environment in the classroom. Training will focus on relationship building, the 4 Essential Elements of the Restorative Classroom, responding to challenging behavior, and taking care of ourselves so we can effectively do this work. We recommend that participants have completed “Introduction to Restorative Practices” training.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND MINDFULNESS
A look at the current research on mindfulness practices and their positive effects for the classroom teacher and for students. Experience mindfulness as a tool to increase one’s emotional intelligence, reduce stress, and create a more peaceful classroom. Teachers who effectively manage their cognitive-emotional states get better results with the students they are teaching. Participants will gain tools to regulate mind-body states more effectively and efficiently, resulting in reduced stress. Participants will experience several practices that they can use immediately.
Monday February 24 from 8am to 3pm in the Professional Development Center
For more information on these trainings, please contact Lan.Nguyen@sweetwaterschools.org
H. Construction Completed! The drop-off zone is almost completed. There are a few items that need to be painted. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for February 28th at 1:00 PM.
I. Parking. Several teachers have made us aware of students parking in the teacher's areas. We will do our best to monitor and advise students. If this happens to you, please give us the description of the car and license plate number.
J. Titan Showcase (formerly know as Titan Expo). We will discuss the Titan Showcase at our next faculty meeting. The Showcase is set for March 19th with a minimum day on March 20th. The goal of this Showcase is to highlight student work and make connections with college and career goals. Mr. Banuelos sent something out this past week with more details.
